But a talented teen who writes and composes a full opera before graduating from high school IS NEWS! DC born and raised, Juan Amaya's first opera, Cinde'ella, had its world premiere this weekend at The Duke Ellington School of the Arts. Amaya has been diligently working on the score for more than two years. Cinde'ella was part of A Night At the Opera: The Many Faces of Cinderella. Four fully-costumed, staged operatic versions of Cinderella, all directed by Dr. Mary Jane Ayers. Check out this video from Bob Madigan

Among the performers Chris Mann from The Voice and The newly crowned winner of the 12th season of "American Idol," Candice Glover But there is a lot more than than glitz, for instance the haunting story of twin brothers who joined the National Guard just two weeks before 9/11, never suspecting that they would fight in two of the longest wars in America's history. And of course remembering the fallen and the forgotten. This year is the 60th anniversary of the Korean War Armistice and the broadcast will honor the profound sacrifices of the proud veterans those who fought and died in what has been called "the forgotten war."
This weekend tens of thousands of motorcycles converged on DC for Rolling Thunder XXVI "Ride For Freedom" 'which pays homage to the Nation's Veterans, particularly those still Prisoners of War/Missing in Action from all Wars' The main event was Sunday but the kick start was a moving and solemn ceremony at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial.
Because of the horrific scenes coming out of Oklahoma after the tornado, the members of the Havre de Grace Seventh-day Adventist Church, Rockville and the Pray at the Pump Movement (PAPM) are sponsoring a community musical fundraiser to secure funds for the victims of the Oklahoma tragedy. Outstanding Montgomery County artists such as trumpeter Dr. Rodney Charitable and other musical and dance artists from around the Washington metropolitan area will be on hand. PAPM is suggesting that the community stop by the event in between their shopping and running weekend errands and enjoy the music and leave a donation for the victims. The contributions will be sent to ADRA, Adventist Development Relief Agency. This is National Police Week. It pays special recognition to those law enforcement officers who have lost their lives in the line of duty for the safety and protection of others. The National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial is centered in the 400 block of E Street, NW. Monday evening was the 25th annual Candle Light Vigil and the Roll Call of Fallen Law Enforcement Heroes added to the Memorial this year.
The Children's Chorus of Washington (CCW) "has taken its place among the finest children's choral ensembles in the country, and is recognized for its education program and artistic excellence. CCW represents over 100 public and private schools in the greater Washington, DC area." They also continue to practice cultural diplomacy with a trip to China! It's the name of the Food & Friend's shuttle bus that ferried nearly a dozen drag queens around DC to some of the restaurants taking part in Food & Friend's Dining Out for Life. More than 100 restaurants throughout DC, Virginia and Maryland donated 25% -110% of their proceeds from lunch and/or dinner to Food & Friends helping to get daily nutritious meals to thousands of your neighbors facing HIV/AIDS, cancer and other life-challenging illnesses. BTW, the thumb nail picture is of "all dolled up" Craig Shniderman, executive director of Food & Friends standing with NBC News National Correspondent Steve Handelsman (who just happened to be at La Tomate in DuPont Circle when Queen Force One landed.)

Thousands of DC area students who have gone through the playwrighting program have experienced a pretty dramatic turnaround in academic achievement. Now there is a book "Write to Dream" ‘30 of the best plays written by YPT students from 1995-2012.'

That's the Leukemia Lymphoma Society (LLS) which has helped fund research that saves lives. The Leukemia Ball is the huge fund raiser for the LLS National Capital Chapter and it has once again been a HUGE success.
