Llama on the Loose in Darnestown

January 30, 2006 - 2:40pm
DARNESTOWN, Md. -- Watch out if you're in the Darnestown area. A wayward llama is on the loose.

Montgomery County police say it's possible that it's not a llama but an alpaca -- an animal native to Peru.

The animal -- named Zodiac -- is dark charcoal gray with white feet and some white markings on his face. He is 7 years old and is about 4 to 4 and a half feet tall, Montgomery County police spokeswoman Lucille Bauer tells WTOP.

Zodiac's owner is aware that he is missing and is working to locate him, Bauer says.

The animal was last seen Sunday night near Haddonfield Lane and Route 28.

The owner says a dog scared the animals Sunday at her farm. Three of the animals broke through a pasture fence, but she was quickly able to catch two of them.

Drivers are urged to be extra careful.

If you see the animal, call Montgomery County Police at 301-279-8000.
