ARLINGTON, Va. - The U.S. national soccer player, injured in a deadly accident on George Washington Parkway Tuesday morning, was not the driver of the car involved in the crash, WTOP has learned.

Charlie Davies underwent several hours of surgery at Washington Hospital Center. His injuries are not considered life threatening.

Two women were in the car: One of them, 22-year-old Ashley Roberta of Phoenix, Md., was killed.

U.S. Park Police Sgt. David Schlosser said the accident took place at about 3:15 a.m. Tuesday in the southbound lanes of the parkway in Virginia. The impact of the crash sheared the car in half, WTOP first reported.

The cause of the accident remains under investigation.

U.S. Soccer Federation spokesman Neil Buethe said Davies' injuries were not life-threatening but "possibly" career-threatening, but he added: "We don't know specifically what the surgery is for."

"Obviously, as a team we were saddened to learn this news," U.S. coach Bob Bradley said. "Our thoughts and prayers are with Charlie and his family, as well as the other person in the car and the families of the others involved. ... We are relying on each other in a moment that has for sure hit us all hard."

The U.S. team was in Washington area to prepare for Wednesday night's World Cup qualifying game against Costa Rica.
