Rosa Gutierrez Lopez, 40, who fled from El Salvador in 2005, was ordered by immigration officials to return to her native country last week. Her three children, ages 11, 9 and 6, were all born in the United States. Lopez was granted sanctuary in a Bethesda, Maryland church. “The reason I took sanctuary is because I love my children and do not want to leave my country,” Gutierrez Lopez said, through an interpreter. “I want to fight from here.”
