Years after an outbreak was stamped out, rabies has returned to the raccoons of New York City’s most densely populated borough.
The 65-year-old was bitten on the hand during a yoga retreat. She began experiencing pain six weeks later, and eventually tested positive for rabies. She’d never been vaccinated against the virus.
Animal control officers captured the animal, and it was promptly euthanized. Lab testing confirmed the animal had indeed been host to the rabies virus.
The Fairfax County Health Department is urging residents to steer clear of wild animals and report animal attacks immediately, after three skunks and a raccoon tested positive for rabies.
After initially testing positive for rabies, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have ruled that a D.C. bulldog did not actually have the disease.
It’s possible that there was a vaccine failure, said a city veterinarian, or that the dog’s system didn’t mount an appropriate immune response.
A wild groundhog caught in the Maryland Zoo July 8 had rabies, and officials are warning those who may have touched the animal to contact the Maryland Department of Health.
