After one of the D.C. region’s deadliest roads got a speed camera, some residents and law enforcement officials in Prince George’s County, Maryland, are pushing for more.
Speed camera ticketing is now in effect along Indian Head Highway at Old Fort Road. The decision comes as traffic fatalities along the busy stretch in Prince George’s County — known as one of the deadliest corridors in the region — continue to occur.
“The number of people getting tickets in the city is exploding. It has increased four-fold since 2007,” said AAA Mid-Atlantic’s John Townsend.
Thousands of drivers zooming through the Suitland Road Bridge work zone area on the Capital Beltway in Prince George’s County, Maryland, are getting caught by the speed cameras in place since last year.
“We don’t send our civil citations for speed camera enforcement or red light enforcement via email,” said Montgomery County police Sgt. Rebecca Innocenti.
The number of recent attacks on area speed cameras is now up to 13. D.C. police announced on Monday two new cases on top of 11 in February.
Drive over Suitland Road bridge on the Capital Beltway? Watch out, there are two new speed cameras issuing tickets along the construction zone there.
The speed camera located on the northbound lanes of Interstate 295 near the Naval Research Lab “was removed for repairs following an act of vandalism,” D.C. police told WTOP.
In a statement, D.C. police say that the camera’s previous location crowded into a lane at an unused truck inspection area.
Critics say a camera placed just off northbound I-295 in D.C. is a hazard because it sits too close to traffic.
