PHOTOS: Washington Commanders unveil new uniforms

The Washington Commanders went back to the future Wednesday morning, unveiling their new uniforms that closely resemble the Super Bowl era ensemble from the franchise’s glory years and significant changes to the alternate black uniforms.

Last year, the Commanders played three primetime games in what was dubbed their Super Bowl era throwbacks, the white jerseys with the burgundy pants with white and gold side striping down the outseam. Those now become their primary white uniforms.

The classic burgundy jersey with white pants and burgundy and gold side striping returns for the first time since the team’s 2022 rebrand. Gold pants with burgundy and white side striping are available to both the white and burgundy jerseys.

Also returning: The gold and white striping down the middle of the burgundy helmet.

Commanders managing partner Josh Harris made good on his word at the NFL owners meetings last month.

“I was there for the ’70s, ’80s and early ’90s, so I lived through how amazing those teams were and what an impact it had on me,” Harris said in Phoenix last month. “I know that thousands of our fans, or millions maybe, feel the same way. I think it’s important to go back to that as much as you can.”

The black alternate uniform has been overhauled; gone are the jersey numbers on the helmet, the complete lack of the team’s primary color and the military-style jersey numbers and name plates. The traditional block numerals are back, as is the spear on the helmet similar to the logo seen on the franchise’s uniforms from 1965-68 again worn as throwbacks in 2002 in celebration of the team’s 70th anniversary. The helmet also bucked the single gold stripe down the middle for gold and burgundy striping that leans even further into the team’s primary color.

The new black uniform even comes with a catchy, new nickname: Hail Raiser.

The look from the team’s 2022 rebrand was widely panned by longtime Burgundy and Gold fans, so this change back to a look closely resembling the team’s that won three Super Bowls in the 1980s and early 90s is refreshing.
