Jack Evans says he will not run in special election for his former DC Council seat

Former D.C. Councilman Jack Evans told The Washington Post he will not run in a special election for his former Ward 2 seat. He still plans to run for the seat in the general election, however.

“I have decided it is best to not seek to run for the position which I resigned from in January and instead focus on a new start for the next four years,” Evans told The Washington Post on Wednesday. “Not running in the special is also a way of showing my sincere regret for the mistakes I made.”

Evans resigned in January amid an ethics scandal that had the rest of the council on the verge of booting him from his seat. He filed to run for the seat again less than two weeks later.

Evans is still running in the June Democratic primary for a full, four-year term on his former seat. The primary for the four-year term will actually happen before the special election. D.C.’s primary is scheduled for June 2.
