WASHINGTON — Do cooler temperatures and shorter days make you want to dip into a hot bowl of chicken noodle soup, sip on a steamy mocha or warm up with a spicy burrito?
The onset of fall and winter often trigger cravings for comfort food, but your comfort food of choice may do more harm than good — especially when it comes to your health.
The Center for Science in the Public Interest released a list of 10 commonly found foods to avoid, based on a combination of calories, saturated fat, sodium, white flour and sugar — all of which contribute to obesity, diabetes and heart disease.
Topping the list of foods to avoid is Stouffer’s Satisfying Servings (16 oz.) White Meat Chicken Pot Pie. The frozen meal has 1,180 calories, 26 grams of saturated fat and 1,860 milligrams of sodium.
Second on the list is a no-toppings-added Five Guys hamburger, which contains 700 calories and 20 grams of saturated fat (a day’s worth). If you’re watching your waist, consider holding the bacon and skipping the fries on your next order. The Five Guys bacon cheeseburger packs 920 calories and 30 grams of saturated fat. An order of regular fries has 950 calories, while a large order contains 1,310 calories.
