Events planned to mark National Day of Service and Remembrance

WASHINGTON — Sept. 11 is a National Day of Service and Remembrance, and there are many events going on in the D.C. region to mark the day.

Thousands of volunteers are gathering on the National Mall on Friday to pack meals for senior citizens in need.

There’s an Earth Conservation Corps wetland cleanup on Friday morning along the Anacostia River near Nationals Park.

Schoolchildren nationwide will take part in a Star Spangled Banner Sing-A-Long at 1 p.m. on Friday.

At a Friday event in D.C. called “Generational Ties,” children will turn war veterans’ stories into books to be given to other kids who had parents deployed after the Sept. 11 attacks.

If you don’t have time to volunteer on Friday, there are plenty of other ways to give back to your community.  Here are a few:

  •  Donate blood to the Red Cross this week in honor of Sept. 11.
  •  The Student Conservation Association and American Express have organized a Find Your Park Day of Service Saturday at Lyndon Baines Johnson Memorial Grove along the George Washington Parkway.  Volunteers will be doing things like clearing invasive plants and garbage and building picnic tables.
  • You can sign up anytime to get trained in basic disaster response skills.
  • The National Park Service is always looking for volunteers to help maintain the Martin Luther King Junior Memorial and help Park Rangers answer visitor questions.
