WASHINGTON — A protest that was more like a party or parade turned up Wednesday night in the normally quiet Chevy Chase area of D.C.
Disrupt J20, which is made up of various activist groups, and WERK For Peace, a group formed in the wake of the shooting at the Pulse nightclub in Orlando, teamed up to put on what they called a “Queer Dance Party” in front of Vice President-elect Mike Pence’s rented home.
They oppose Pence’s stance on LGBT issues.
A large crowd gathered at the Friendship Heights Metro station, and made their way up Western Avenue, led by a police escort and a pickup truck blasting dance music.
But when the protesters arrived at Pence’s street, they found it blocked by a police barricade and a Secret Service vehicle.
So the non-violent party went on, right in the middle of Western Avenue.
One man climbed atop the truck to do some provocative twerking, while others danced and sang along to songs by artists like Lady Gaga, Madonna and Queen.
Some people waved rainbow flags, and others held signs with slogans like “Love Trumps Hate.”
Disrupt J20 is planning several more protests in D.C. over the next few days.
