Car Review: Hyundai’s small car sips fuel, blends in

Practicality, affordability and even luxury can go together.

This Hyundai Elantra Hybrid Limited came in what’s called “Electronic Gray” with a “Sage Gray” interior.

The interior features seats made of a leather substitute called H-Tex, which feels like the real thing, while probably being much more durable.

Interestingly, a bar comes out of the dash to separate the passenger from the shifter and climate controls.

While we’re focusing on the inside, I will point out the obvious: This compact car is … compact. I definitely wished the smallish front door openings gave me more clearance, something I experienced a while ago in the also otherwise excellent Mazda3. This one is plenty comfy once inside, though, and the kids had no issues with the back seat.

Outside, it’s not bad looking, featuring what Hyundai calls a “shark-nose front,” but it will still quickly blend into a parking lot.

The damage, after shipping, is $30,810 for this Elantra Hybrid.

The top line on this power train is that it gets up to 58 miles per gallon on the highway. While it does sip gas, this hybrid setup, perhaps unsurprisingly, creates no screamer of a car.

Also, this little car is packed with safety and convenience technology, and it comes with Hyundai’s very long warranties.

Basically, it’s a smart choice, once you get yourself in the door.
