RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — The American Civil War Museum will build into the hillside at Historic Tredegar, incorporating the ruins of a crumbling brick iron works structure into the lobby of its new glass-fronted museum.
The Richmond Times-Dispatch reports (http://bit.ly/1qffHV1) construction of the 28,500-square-foot building is expected to begin early next year. American Civil War Museum Foundation president Waite Rawls says the new building will offer expanded gallery spaces, an experience theater and improved storage and preservation areas for the museum’s collections of Civil War artifacts.
Other planned enhancements include a self-guided tour of the historic iron works site called “Tredegar Works,” and an interactive water exhibit for young visitors called “Building Steam.”
The building’s target opening date is early summer 2018. The cost of the project is estimated at about $37 million.
