Outlook for summer travel plans and deals

WASHINGTON — Summer is right around the corner and vacation-planning season is in full swing. So where’s everyone going?

Orbitz is preparing to unveil its annual Summer Travel Forecast, but WTOP got a sneak peek. The hottest destination is Las Vegas, Nevada, followed by Cancun, Mexico, and Orlando, Florida.

Senior editor Jeanenne Tornatore says vacation costs are down.

“The good news is that [travelers] are going to see bigger savings than we’ve seen in the past couple years. Airfares are down nearly 9 percent for summer travel to our top destinations. Hotel rates are flat.”

As for what’s most important to travelers, it’s the deals.

“Even though we’re seeing prices down, really, the deal — getting those great prices and value out of their vacations — is what’s more important. In fact, 73 percent of consumers said they’ll go where the deal is,” Tornatore says. “They don’t have their heart set on one specific destination, but they’ll go where they can find the most value.”

Already, she says, two-thirds of travelers have booked their summer vacations, so if you haven’t — don’t wait much longer.
