Woman dies after rescue from Prince George’s Co. house fire

WASHINGTON — A woman rescued from a Prince George’s County house fire last week died from her injuries Sunday.

Emily Novotny, 74, died Sunday afternoon — almost a week after Prince George’s County Fire Department crews rescued her from a house fire in the 6300 block of Sheridan Street in Riverdale, Maryland. Novotny was in critical condition with burn and smoke inhalation injuries as a result of the fire early Wednesday morning.

Emergency crews transported her to Medstar Washington Hospital Center Burn Unit, but she later died from injuries she sustained in the blaze.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation, but it appears that the cause of the fire is accidental, said Prince George’s County Fire Department spokesman Mark Brady in a news release.

This is the ninth fire fatality with an accidental cause in Prince George’s County in 2016, Brady said. There were three fire-related deaths with an accidental cause in 2015; five in 2014.
