WASHINGTON — It took 85 firefighters to extinguish a blaze that broke out Sunday afternoon at Leisure World, a major retirement community near Rockville, Maryland.
The fire was reported at 15101 Glade Drive, where several apartment buildings were damaged, according to Montgomery Fire & Rescue Service spokesman Pete Piringer.
Several people had to evacuate the building; one person was treated for burns and smoke inhilation, Piringer said.
According to officials, the cause of the fire was a cigarette making contact with oxygen.
The estimated cost of damage is around $500,000.
