Trashed boat sparks fire at Montgomery County garbage site

WASHINGTON — It took 100 firefighters to contain a blaze at a garbage transfer station in Rockville on Saturday, a fire sparked after someone tried to dispose of a boat, officials said.

The fire started around 12:30 p.m. in the “pit” area of the Montgomery County garbage transfer station at 16101 Frederick Road, said Pete Piringer, a Montgomery County Fire & Rescue Service spokesman.

Piringer said someone threw away a boat and left fuel in the tank, which likely caused the fire.

One firefighter was taken to the hospital with a minor injury.
