Some appliances are tax-free in Md. on Presidents Day weekend

WASHINGTON — Are you in the market for a new air conditioner, a new refrigerator, or even just some light bulbs?

Presidents Day weekend would be a good time to buy them.

The Maryland comptroller declared Feb. 17-19 as Shop Maryland Energy Weekend, which means customers will get a break from the state’s 6 percent sales tax on certain Energy Star appliances.

The list of tax-free Energy Star products includes:

  • Air conditioners
  • Washers and dryers
  • Furnaces
  • Heat pumps
  • Boilers
  • Solar water heaters (which are tax-exempt at all times now)
  • Standard size refrigerators
  • Dehumidifiers
  • Programmable thermostats
  • Compact fluorescent light bulbs

As if that weren’t enough, rebates are also available for appliances through your utility company.

Washington Gas has a rebate to save $50 on a storage water and $230 on a tankless water heater. You can find that rebate on Washington Gas’s website.

You can also find more information on Shop Maryland Energy Weekend on the Maryland comptroller’s website.
