Off-campus home in College Park burns, firefighter injured

WASHINGTON — A firefighter in College Park was injured and six students displaced in an off-campus house fire early Saturday morning.

Prince George’s County Fire spokesman Mark Brady said  Saturday that the home on the 7400 block of Dartmouth Avenue was rented by University of Maryland students and suffered “significant damage” in the blaze, which occurred around 4:30 a.m.

Working smoke alarms had alerted the students who were able to escape unharmed.

The fire burned so intensely, however, that the firefighters were called out of the house until most of the fire was out, reported Brady.  The firefighter who sustained an injury had minor burns to both wrists and was transported to the Burn Unit at Med Star Washington Hospital Center.

Investigators have yet to determine a cause, and fire loss is estimated at $200,000.
