WASHINGTON – People’s lives have become increasingly more social, at least online.
And Thursday celebrates the evolution of the web with the second annual “Social Media Day.”
News and tech website Mashable declared June 30 “Social Media Day” last year “to celebrate the revolution of media becoming social.”
To bring people together in Social Media Day gatherings, Mashable has organized meetups in cities around the world, including Mexico City, Toronto and Barcelona.
According to Mashable’s Meetup page, there are 1,411 communities holding Social Media Day gatherings Thursday, including D.C., Fairfax, and Baltimore.
The gatherings will celebrate the “technological advancements that enable everyone to connect with real-time information, communication from miles apart and have their voices be heard.”
The Pew Internet & American Life Project recently found that about 60 percent of Internet users use at least one social networking service such as Twitter, Facebook, or MySpace. The average age of adult social networking users is 38.
In the true spirit of social media, Mashable has set up pages on Twitter and Facebook.
On the inaugural Social Media Day, Vadim Lavrusik wrote that “social media has changed our lives. It has not only changed the way we communicate, but the way we connect with one another, consume our news, conduct our work, organize our lives, and much more. So why not celebrate?”
Lavrusik was community manager and social strategist at Mashable before becoming journalist program manager at Facebook.
