Pet of the Week: 2024 pets

Pet of the Week is a weekly feature that highlights a pet available for adoption from D.C.’s Humane Rescue Alliance.

Take a look back at the pets of 2023.

Meet Odie! His foster family called him “an absolute dream,” and they said he’s one of the easiest foster dogs they’ve ever had.

Odie is a polite and gentle couch potato. As long as he gets his morning and evening walks, he’s perfectly content to spend the rest of the day lounging. Odie is a big fan of gentle pets, soft kisses and hanging out with his people. He’s always appreciative of comfy beds and a good meal, too.

While Odie would prefer to be the only pet in his new home, he’s done wonderfully with kids. Don’t let his distinguished gray face fool you — this sweet senior still enjoys a playful tug or fetch session, and showing off how smart he is. He knows “sit” and “come here” and picks up new tricks quickly (especially when treats are involved).

Odie is looking for a peaceful place to enjoy his golden years — somewhere he can soak up all the love and kindness he deserves.

To learn more about adopting him, visit humanerescuealliance.org/adopt.

Mitch is a super cuddly, 2-year-old pup with a sleek black coat and a charming white stripe down his face.

He’s the type of dog who makes everyone smile — whether it’s with his cheerful greetings, wagging tail or the kisses he loves to give.

Mitch absolutely adores playing fetch, meeting new people and going on walks. But after all the excitement, he’s happiest curled up on the couch, snuggled close to his favorite person.

He’s a quick learner who thrives on new adventures, making him the ideal companion for someone who loves exploring the world. With a little puppy energy still in him, Mitch is looking for someone who will enjoy taking him on walks and help him work on his recall.

To learn more about adopting Mitch, visit humanerescuealliance.org/adopt.

Bowie is a young guy with good leash manners and lots of energy. He loves nothing more than a good cuddle. Bowie knows some commands already, like sit and stay, and would love to learn more, as he really loves pleasing people and earning treats! He’s been gentle and friendly with everyone he meets in his foster neighborhood. He’s housebroken, though he sometimes needs a reminder as to what counts as “outside.” He was with a cat in his last foster home, and would most likely do well with calm cats or dogs.

Today, Maria is thriving and ready to embrace the beautiful life she truly deserves. As a senior, she brings a wonderfully calm presence to any home. She enjoys gentle strolls and, most importantly, soaking up all the love and attention she can get.

Maria requires prescription dog food, but she’s an enthusiastic eater and has no trouble with meal time. Her foster parent can’t speak highly enough of her: “Maria is the sweetest, most affectionate dog I’ve ever met. Despite her past, she is polite, loves meeting new people, and is always ready for pets!”

She would love a home with a family that will help her blossom!

And speaking of “blossoming,” a volunteer who recently took Gala out of the shelter for a morning adventure said, “While the shelter makes her nervous, the moment you get away from the hubbub, she’s a different dog. She’s adventurous (hello, car rides!), loves to sniff, finds perfect sticks and asks for belly scratches. If you like cuddling with dogs, then OG is the guy for you. All he wants in life is to curl up in your lap (his size doesn’t matter — he will find a way!). His foster parent says he’s also a polite houseguest and good at apartment living. At 1 years old, he still has some puppy energy, but he’s quickly learned basic commands like “sit and “stay,” and he’s already crate and house trained. We’d love to help him find a new home where he can enjoy all his favorite things: walks, scratches behind his ears, treats, and snuggles on the couch. Is OG the loyal companion you’ve been looking for? To learn more, visit www.humanerescuealliance.org/dogs.

Meet Acorn!

Everyone can’t stop raving about what a sweetheart Acorn is. Despite being really underweight when we found him outside alone on a cold day, Acorn is sweet, loving, and resilient. Acorn is a good boy who knows “sit,” walks nicely on a leash, plays independently with toys, and sleeps soundly in a crate. He’s a medium-energy dog who’d be a great walking partner for you.

If you’re seeking a dog with a heart of gold who loves to cuddle and give kisses, you’re going to want to meet Acorn! To learn more, visit www.humanerescuealliance.org/dogs.

Meet Wade!

Wade has an adorable face and he really wants a lap to put it in. He’s a big-hearted dog who is happiest when around people. Wade is young and he has bursts of energy, so he loves walks and playtime to burn it off. He loves short play breaks during the day to chase a ball outside and flop around in the grass.

Wade is eager to please, adores attention, and is a treat enthusiast, making training a breeze — this smart boy already knows “sit,” “stay” and “come.”

Wade would do well with a lot of continued mental and physical enrichment and training. Ready to welcome Wade into your home? Learn more at www.humanerescuealliance.org/adopt.

Meet Wiz!

He’s a lively and wonderful senior pup who enjoys spending his time playing with tennis balls, napping and getting belly rubs from his foster family. At 9 years old, Wiz is well past his puppy days, but still energetic and playful. Wiz would prefer to live out his golden years in a quiet home with no children or other pets.

Meet Luna!

Luna is a snuggle enthusiast who can turn any ordinary day into a cozy cuddle fest. When it comes to playtime, she is over the moon for squeaky toys and loves to play fetch. Luna also has great manners. She walks well on a leash and greets other dogs and people with curiosity (and without jumping!). Her foster mom says Luna is “a lot of fun, very sweet and a joy to be around. She’ll make someone very happy!”

Want to kick off the new year with a new best friend? Come meet Luna today! Visit humanerescuealliance.org to learn more.
