2022 NFL Week 13 Recap

Vengeance in victory, reversal of fortunes and a no good, very bad tie highlight the NFL Week 13 Recap.

Saints 16
Bucs 17

Tom Brady has almost as many fourth-quarter comebacks as years on this planet. Retire, already!

Colts 19
Cowboys 54

Thanks in part to Malik Hooker’s revenge, Dallas had the second-most points (33) in the fourth quarter of a game in NFL history. This says as much about how lousy Indy is as it does how explosive the Cowboys are.

Chargers 20
Raiders 27

Las Vegas exists to play spoiler and wreak havoc on the standings — in both fantasy and the real NFL.

Chiefs 24
Bengals 27

Kansas City reversed the second-half trend in this matchup — the Chiefs were outscored 34-6 in the second half of the last two losses to Cincinnati — but it still wasn’t enough to win in the Queen City for the first time since 1984. The Bengals have won six of seven against the Chiefs and Joe Burrow is clearly Patrick Mahomes’ kryptonite.

Dolphins 17
49ers 33

There’s two consistencies about Jimmy Garoppolo: He’s impossibly handsome and chronically injured. This latest episode of the latter may have derailed San Francisco’s Super Bowl hopes — and I had the Niners as the best team in the NFC.

Seahawks 27
Rams 23

Seattle shrugged off an infirmary full of players to slide into control of the last NFC wild card and send the rival Rams to the worst 12-game start by a defending champion in NFL history.

Commanders 20
Giants 20 (OT)

I’ve said it here for a decade: Ties are a curse and a stain upon the NFL and should be eradicated at all costs.

It was bad when these two teams did it 25 years ago and it’s even worse now.

Broncos 9
Ravens 10

Baltimore finally found the recipe … you can’t blow a 4th quarter lead if you don’t have one!

But seriously, the Ravens’ season comes down to how they fare in Cincinnati to finish the season. So, as long as Lamar Jackson is ready for that game, it’s been established they can tread water with Tyler Huntley.

Browns 27
Texans 14

For the second time this season, a Pro Bowl quarterback made his debut for his new team on the road against his former team.

Exactly 700 days since his last game as a Texan, Deshaun Watson (with his accusers in attendance) posted the worst QBR of his career in his first game for the Browns. Cleveland clearly made this controversial trade for 2023 and beyond — and we shouldn’t expect the Browns to be any good until then.

Titans 10
Eagles 35

A.J. Brown lit up his former team to help his current team make a historic statement: Philly’s balance is the stuff Super Bowl teams are made of. The Eagles are scary good and the Titans — now 1-5 against teams .500 or better — are pretenders thriving in a lousy division.

Jets 22
Vikings 27

Minnesota swept the AFC East to pull within a game of clinching the NFC North for the first time since 2017. The Vikings are undefeated in close games, which could serve them well in the playoffs.

Jaguars 14
Lions 40

This was the battle between the two worst teams of 2021 but only one looked like they’d be picking in the top two again next year.

Detroit scored on eight (8!) straight drives and even played some good defense to quietly stay on the periphery of the playoff picture in the NFC. Considering they beat Washington head-to-head, the Burgundy and Gold better watch their backs.

Packers 28
Bears 19

Even as Green Bay struggles with their Aaron Rodgers problems (and there’s definitely more than one), the Packers surpassed their hated rival for the most franchise wins in NFL history, pushing Chicago out of that perch for the first time in more than a century. Bears fans’ only hope to take the baton back is a Justin Fields reign that rivals Rodgers’ in Titletown. Good luck, Chicago.

Steelers 19
Falcons 16

For those of you who continue to stan QB wins as a legit stat: Keep that same energy for Pittsburgh being 4-1 with T.J. Watt in the lineup.

Bills 24
Patriots 10

Lost in the awful “Pat Patriot” throwback jerseys and the well-earned shade thrown at Matt Patricia — Devin McCourty played in his 200th regular season game as a New England Patriot. The 35-year-old safety — who has missed only five games in his career and none since 2015 — should garner more attention for being one of the greatest Patriots ever.
