March Madness: Superhero Smackdown (First Round)

WTOP's Jason Fraley previews the superhero bracket (Part 1)

March Madness rages on this week with the NCAA basketball tournament.

So, it’s time once again for our annual WTOP entertainment bracket.

This year, it’s a superhero smackdown between comic book characters!

It was impossible to narrow the list to just 16 superheroes, forcing me to cut Wanda/Vision, Falcon, Winter Soldier, War Machine, Green Lantern, Cyborg, Ant-Man, Robin, Black Widow, Hawkeye, Nick Fury, Professor X, Cyclops, Jean Grey, Storm, Beast, Rogue, Gambit, Nightcrawler, Quicksilver, Gamora, Groot, Drax and Rocket.

Likewise, it was tough narrowing the list to just 16 villains, forcing me to cut such beloved Batman baddies as The Penguin, Mr. Freeze and Scarecrow, as well as such sinister X-Men villains as Apocalypse, Mystique, Juggernaut and Sabertooth (you could really do an entire bracket of just X-Men, but let’s spread the wealth).

These might seem like glaring omissions, but when you see the bracket above, try to ask yourself: who would you kick off instead? It’s a tough task but somebody’s gotta do it!

In the end, I think this is the cream of the crop, seeded according to comic book status, box office power, dominant superpowers and pop culture impact.

Vote below in the First Round and check back Wednesday to see who advances!

(Voting requires Twitter, so create an account even if it’s just for two weeks)
