Car Review: 797hp Dodge Charger SRT Hellcat Redeye is the family sedan that marches to a different drum

Plug-in hybrids and fuel-efficient vehicles have had my attention lately — now I’m shifting gears to a very different, outrageously-powered sedan.

With 797hp from a supercharged V-8, the 2021 Charger Hellcat Redeye will take you from 0-to-big trouble in a few seconds when pushing on the gas. The growl from the V-8 is throaty and only outdone by the supercharger whine when you nail the gas pedal and don’t forget the squealing rear tires. The Charger Hellcat Redeye has wider wheels and tires to allow getting some of the power to the ground. The Charger is a big family sedan but the suspension and sticky tires allow for loads of fun in the corners. Still, it is more comfortable going very fast in straight lines. I found the ride pleasant for the normal daily commute with the added rumble of a big V-8.

This Charger Hellcat Redeye is no wallflower. It looks mean with its flared fenders and Satin black hood with large hood scoop and vents. Its looks command your attention. Sweet blacked-out wide 20” wheels also show off some serious Brembo brakes that signal its power before you fire it up.

Inside this big brute, there is comfortable space for five. The leather/Alcantara seats that are heated and ventilated will help pass the miles. Those hanging out in the back seat have a good amount of head and legroom. The trunk like the rest of the car is big and ready to swallow a week or two worth of luggage. The easy-to-use NAV system with large 8.4” touch screen and the loud Harmon Kardon 19-speaker surround system does its best to try to drown out the mighty whining V-8.
