1 dead, 2 hurt in fire Frederick Co. row house fire

WASHINGTON — One person is dead and two others are fighting for their lives after a fire broke out in a house in downtown Emmitsburg, Maryland, in northern Frederick County.

Deputy Chief Chip Jewell with the Frederick County Fire Department says the department received the call of smoke showing from the two-story row house around 10 a.m. Monday.

The fire in the 100 block of West Main Street was just down the street from the firehouse and help arrived quickly.

Jewell said it took firefighters a half-hour to get the flames under control.

He says firefighters pulled three victims from the flames — one of them, a 74-year-old woman was pronounced dead at the scene.

Jewell says her 69-year-old husband was transported to University of Maryland shock trauma with life-threatening injuries.

The third victim, a woman found in the adjoining apartment, is a 43-year-old who Jewell says is undergoing treatment for burns.

The fire marshal is investigating how the fire started and who was staying at the home, which included several apartments.
