California charbroiled burger chain comes to Gaithersburg

WASHINGTON — Habit Burger, a California-based burger chain that got its start as a shack on the beach in Santa Barbara in 1969, has set its charbroiled sights on the DMV.

Habit Burger, which has been a publicly traded company since 2014, may have funky  California roots, but it is not a small chain, with more than 200 locations.

Habit Burger will open its third D.C.-area location Jan. 6, in Gaithersburg, at 464 N. Frederick Avenue. Habit Burger currently has restaurants in Rockville, Maryland, and Ashburn, Virginia, with plans for at least three more D.C.-area locations by spring.

Future locations include Waldorf, Maryland, in February and University Park, Maryland, in May.

Consumer Reports ranks Habit Burger, which makes its burgers on stainless steel charbroilers with cast-iron grills, among the best-tasting burgers.

The eatery serves up more than charbroiled burgers. The menu also includes line-caught tuna, sweet potato fries, tempura green beans, chicken and salads. And, in true SoCal-style, the restaurant offers avocado toppings.
