Corazon is a beautiful black-and-white cat who gazes at the world through mesmerizing, slightly crossed, green-gold eyes. This lovely 5-year-old girl arrived at the Washington Animal Rescue League from an overcrowded partner shelter and is now hoping to spend Valentine’s Day—and the rest of her life—with that special someone. Could that be you? If you’re looking for a quiet, gentle feline who prefers observing life to being in the middle of the action, you just might be. Pet of the Week: Tulip

Feb. 16: Tip toe through the tulips? Well this is just what Tulip would like to do with you! Meet this sweet three year-old hound mix with a pretty light tan coat and nice disposition. She is a friendly, energetic gal who loves to take walks and smell all that the world has to offer. Tulip would prefer to skip the dog parks, as she is a bit dog selective. However she could live with calm, older dogs.

Grizz is quite the handsome hunk! This 2-year-old chocolate Lab mix is a big boy with a heart to match. He’s friendly and exuberant, and has a wonderful free spirit attitude. Grizz loves to play and when he’s had enough will look for a lap to sit in. (Nobody told him he isn’t really a lap dog.) He also likes other dogs, although his size, strength, and rough play style can be a bit much for some. Grizz is looking for adopters who believe that you can never have enough dog. In return, he’ll give a lifetime of love, loyalty, and fun! Mariola is a darling two-year-old tabby with pretty white paws who ended up at the shelter when her person became ill. Not surprisingly, this sweet girl is a bit confused and intimidated by shelter life. She takes a little time to get up the courage to engage with new people but once she feels comfortable, she is oh so sweet! She loves having her neck scratched and will purr loudly to encourage more. All Mariola wants is someone to love and be loved by her. Could that be you? At first glance, Walnut looks like an oversized stuffed animal; perhaps a Teddy bear come to life. In reality, this handsome boy is a 1.5-year-old Chow mix who can’t wait for a forever home of his own! Walnut is pretty much the perfect dog: friendly with people and dogs, playful, and very affectionate. He’ll happily share his toys with you and then dive into your lap for some snuggling. He’s looking for a human companion who will love him, take him for walks…and brush his coat regularly. (Let’s face it, that gorgeous coat, like a great hairstyle, doesn’t just maintain itself.) Valentino is a handsome, three-year-old grey tabby who may—or may not—have Feline leukemia (FeLV). Huh?
Basically, he has tested positive for the virus on one test (meaning it’s still in his blood stream) and negative on the other, which means the virus has not won the fight. Some cats like Valentino eventually beat the virus while others don’t.
Currently, Valentino acts healthy and happy, if a bit bored by his seclusion in his Kitty City tower condo. He’s a smart, fun-loving boy who is finding unique ways to entertain himself, including playing with his water bowl. But what we really wants is a loving home in which to explore, either as an only cat or with other friendly FeLV-positive felines. Could that be yours? Kara is a gorgeous brown-and-grey tabby cat who arrived at the Oglethorpe facility of the Washington Humane Society/Washington Animal Rescue League from an overcrowded partner shelter. This lovely girl is quiet and curious and would love a new home to explore. (She’s already discovered the joys of a comfy bed all her own!) Although five years is young for a cat, it still qualifies Kara for the Boomers’ Buddies program, which means her adoption fee will be waived for anyone over 50. Pet of the Week: Dogwood

Meet Dogwood, a sweet six-year-old Lab mix who yearns for a home of his own. Just one look into this sweet boy’s eyes will show how desperately he wants to be loved, but, sadly, he’s not sure whether it’ll happen. Dogwood is looking for that special someone who will be patient and gentle with him and will help build his self-confidence so he can truly enjoy all that life has to offer. Could that be you? Yes, it’s a unique name and she’s a unique dog! Blend, a Presa Canario mix (sometimes called a Canary Mastiff) was brought to the Humane Rescue Alliance by her owner due to a family member developing an allergy to her. She has a beautiful brindle coat on her large frame. At seven years old, Blend is middle-aged and is definitely a little laid back, but does have her occasional burst of energy. She would prefer to be the only child as she loves to just lounge all day with her humans and have all the attention. WASHINGTON — It was another great year for WTOP’s Pet of the Week segment.

In 2016, more than 70 pets — both cats and dogs — from the Humane Rescue Alliance were featured on-air and online, in hopes to find a forever home.
