Pet of the Week: WTOP’s 2016 Pets

Pet of the Week: Paul Week of December 27 Meet Paul, a very handsome hound mix looking for his forever home! This two year-old has a beautiful red coat that is second only to his beautiful personality. Paul is a sweet but shy guy who loves to be close to people and get lots of attention. Staff and volunteers at Humane Rescue Alliance make Paul’s den a regular stop to pet his soft coat and rub his amazing ears. But Paul does get nervous sometimes and is not crazy about other dogs. His perfect forever home will be on the quiet side and with an owner who is willing to take long walks to show off his playful side and sniffing skills. Paul would do best in a home without small kids, as he is tentative and nervous. But for his new forever family, he will make a fantastic companion. He would rather snuggle and hang out with his people than play with any toy. Gentle, sweet, and smart, Paul will be a great best friend, and he’s waiting for you at the Oglethorpe Street adoption center. (Humane Rescue Alliance )
Pet of the Week: Rocket  For the week of Dec. 19  Meet Rocket, a charming 2-year-old dog hoping for a home for the holidays — and the rest of his life! Rocket is a Shiba Inu, the smallest of the six original spitz breeds from Japan.  He’s a sweet but shy little guy who can take a little while to feel comfortable with new people. Once he does, he will give you his whole heart and be your devoted companion forever. In return for this devotion and adoration, all Rocket asks for is a home where he can be someone’s beloved one and only. Could that be yours? Stop by the Humane Rescue Alliance’s Oglethorpe Adoption Center soon to meet Rocket and find out. You just might be a match made in Heaven.  (Courtesy Humane Rescue Alliance)
Pet of the Week: Redbud For the week of Dec. 12 Redbud is a 5-year-old lab mix and one of the sweetest dogs you will ever meet. She recently had a litter of puppies and now that they’ve all found forever homes, it’s her turn! She wants nothing more than to be your best friend and an owner who will give her a lot of attention, because let’s be honest, she deserves it. Redbud would be best as the only pet. She has a playful side, but is generally more of a snuggler. If you think Redbud is  the right fit, she’ll be here waiting for you at our Oglethorpe Adoption Center. Come by and see her today!  (Courtesy Humane Rescue Alliance)
Yes, it’s a unique name and she’s a unique dog! Blend, a Presa Canario mix (sometimes called a Canary Mastiff) was brought to the Humane Rescue Alliance by her owner due to a family member developing an allergy to her. She has a beautiful brindle coat on her large frame. At seven years old, Blend is middle-aged and is definitely a little laid back, but does have her occasional burst of energy. She would prefer to be the only child as she loves to just lounge all day with her humans and have all the attention. Please come by our New York Avenue Adoption Center to meet Blend, this week’s Pet of the Week!
Pet of the Week: Blend For the week of Dec. 5 Meet Blend! Yes, it’s a unique name and she’s a unique dog. She has a beautiful brindle coat on her large frame. At seven years old, Blend is middle-aged and is definitely a little laid back, but does have her occasional burst of energy. Pet of the Week: Lissa For the week of Nov. 28 Meet Lissa! Lissa is a big, beautiful lab mix looking to find her forever home. Lissa came to the Humane Rescue Alliance after being transferred from another shelter. She is a happy-go-lucky girl, and she can’t wait to meet her new family.  At just over 1 year old, this big girl has lots of energy and loves to play!  She’s very intelligent, knows some tricks and loves her toys — especially when a game of fetch is involved. Lissa would be best suited for an active home, where she has lots of space to run around and explore. She loves to be the center of attention, so being the only dog in the home would probably be best. Come out to our Oglethorpe Street adoption center and meet Lissa soon! (Courtesy Humane Rescue Alliance)
Pet of the Week: Kyle For the week of Nov. 21 Meet Kyle, a BBD ISO a LFH. (That’s “big black dog in search of a loving forever home” for those of you not familiar with personal ads lingo.) Kyle is a 3-year-old Labrador mix who, at nearly 70 pounds, could still stand to gain a little weight. He’s an over-sized love bug who is happy, friendly, and affectionate — all the good things a dog should be! He’s also young and strong so he’s looking for a home with a human companion who will give him plenty of regular exercise. Could that be you? Stop by the Oglethorpe Adoption Center of the Humane Rescue Alliance to meet Kyle soon and find out if he’s the big dog for you. (Courtesy Humane Rescue Alliance)
Pet of the Week: Cassie For the week of Nov. 14 Meet Cassie. This sweet beagle mix arrived at the Humane Rescue Alliance (HRA) from Alabama with her puppies. Now that they’ve been weaned and adopted, it’s her turn. At 2 years old, Cassie’s not much more than a pup herself … without all of that typical “puppy behavior.” She’s sweet and gentle and would love a home where she could enjoy long walks and time cuddling with her human companions. Cassie does well with other calm dogs, but would be just as happy as someone’s one and only. If you’re looking for a sweet, medium-sized affectionate dog, stop by HRA’s Oglethorpe Adoption Center soon. (Courtesy Humane Rescue Alliance)
Pet of the Week: Teeny For the week of Nov. 7 Don’t let the name fool you, there is nothing teeny about this pup. Teeny is a 3-year-old Cane Corso or Italian Mastiff. He came to the HRA with his two dog siblings who, believe it or not, were both less than 25 pounds. At 114 pounds, he is as a big guy, but the HRA staff classifies him as a big, goofy lap dog. Teeny doesn’t comprehended his size …. he thinks he  is just as small as his siblings. He walks very well on leash and loves strolling in the park with his human companions.  Meet Teeny at our New York Avenue Adoption Center: He needs a lap to sit in! (Photo Courtesy the Humane Rescue Alliance)
Pet of the Week: Champ For the week of Oct. 31 Champ is a handsome 5-year-old dog looking for his forever home.  An American bulldog mix, he came to the Humane Rescue Alliance because his previous owner moved and could no longer take care of him. Because he’s an adult and a little laid back, Champ would enjoy finding a home that is more low key. This playful pup loves going on walks and exploring, but he also loves a couch and a warm lap on which to rest his head. Stop by and meet Champ at our Oglethorpe Street Adoption Center!  (Photo Courtesy the Humane Rescue Alliance)
Thunder, a 2-year-old pit bull mix, is a sweet boy that loves attention.
Pet of the Week: Thunder For the week of Oct. 25 Even though his name is Thunder, he’s not scary or loud. Thunder, a 2-year-old pit bull mix,  is a sweet boy that loves attention. He can be a bit nervous at times, so he would feel more comfortable in a home with older kids. Thunder is very smart, and loves to be doing something that challenges him to solve puzzles or complete daily tasks — like finding the treat hidden in a toy or playing a game in the backyard. Are you an aspiring genius like Thunder looking for fun and adventure around every corner? Come meet him today at the New York Avenue Adoption Center of the Humane Rescue Alliance. Cat of the Week: Lambo  For the week of Oct. 25 It’s hard to believe this handsome big boy was mistaken for a pregnant female, but that’s how Lambo was identified to animal control officers when he was discovered in an office bathroom. How Lambo got there, we’ll never know, but right now he’s hanging out in Kitty City at the Humane Rescue Alliance’s Oglethorpe Adoption Center. Lambo is a favorite with staff and volunteers, who can’t understand why he hasn’t been adopted yet. But, hey, someone else’s loss could be your gain! This 4-year-old is friendly, confident and outgoing. He also gets along with other cats.  All he needs now is a lifelong relationship with a person of his own. Could that be you? Stop by the Humane Rescue Alliance Oglethorpe Adoption Center to meet Lambo and find out!  (Photo Courtesy the Humane Rescue Alliance)
Pet of the Week: Blanco  For the week of Oct. 17  Are you one of those people who just adores big dogs? If so, the Washington Humane Society-Washington Animal Rescue League has the perfect dog for you. His name is Blanco and he’s a purebred American bulldog. That’s right, purebred! Blanco found himself at the shelter when his people could no longer care for him. At 3 years old, he’s past the puppy stage but is very strong and has lots of energy. Although he looks intimidating, Blanco can actually be a bit shy initially but give him a few minutes and he’ll be trying to give you doggy kisses. Blanco is also a pretty chill guy most of the time but can get excited … by things like birds, squirrels, smells, etc. Combined with his size and strength, this enthusiasm can make him something of a force of nature, so he’s looking for a home with someone used to big dogs like him. Could that be you? Stop by the WHS-WARL Oglethorpe Adoption Center to meet Blanco and find out.    (Washington Humane Society/Washington Animal Rescue League)
Cat of the Week: Virgil  For the week of Oct. 17  Meet Virgil, a cat of epic proportions. Well, not really, but at 17 pounds, this handsome black cat is indeed impressive. To be honest, he could stand to lose a couple of pounds — but couldn’t we all? Virgil arrived at the Washington Humane Society-Washington Animal Rescue League when his person could no longer care for him. He’s a bit overwhelmed by shelter life but has begun exploring his new surroundings; for a larger cat, this 5-year-old is surprisingly agile and loves to climb the cat trees and stroll the raised walkways in Kitty City. Virgil has lived with children, other cats, and even a dog, making him an ideal adoption candidate for almost any home. If you’re interested in a friendly, laid-back feline friend, look no further. Just stop by the WHS-WARL Oglethorpe Adoption Center and meet Virgil.  (Washington Humane Society/Washington Animal Rescue League)
Cat of the Week: M&M For the week of Oct. 10 Meet M&M, a beautiful long-haired tortoiseshell cat who somehow found herself on the streets of D.C. Things began to look up when this 9-year-old decided to follow a new human friend home. Although he was unable to keep the friendly feline, he knew the Washington Humane Society-Washington Animal Rescue League would help her. And they did. The first step was to shave her once beautiful but now horribly matted, tangled, uncomfortable fur. Now M&M is relaxing in her own condo at Kitty City while she waits for something a little more permanent…as in forever. She knows that she doesn’t look her best but believes her inner beauty will capture someone’s heart. Could it be yours? Stop by the WHS-WARL Oglethorpe Adoption Center soon and find out.  (Washington Humane Society/Washington Animal Rescue League)
Pet of the Week: Pixie For the week of Oct. 10 Say hello to Pixie, a 10-month-old pit bull mix!   Pixie is still getting used to the world — when she is out and about, she has  trouble remembering the good things that have happened in her life, which makes her act a little nervous. What she’s looking for now is a family that will give her lots of positive experiences to remember. Those lucky folks will get to see the happy puppy that she can be. Right now, her favorite thing to do is to put her head on a friends’ laps and get gentle ear scratches. If you’re looking for a sweetheart to fill your days with love and sunshine, look no further! Come meet Pixie today at the Washington Humane Society-Washington Animal Rescue League’s New York Avenue Adoption Center.    (Washington Humane Society/Washington Animal Rescue League)
Pet of the Week: Reese For the week of Oct. 3
Meet Reese: This 4-month-old boxer mix is just learning about the world, but is very happy to sit in your lap and tell you all she has learned so far. Reese has a beautiful brindle coat and long boxer legs that get tangled up sometimes when she gets excited, but she’s learning! She is extremely sweet, loves people and her inquisitive brown eyes will melt everyone’s heart. Still a puppy, her curiosity and good-natured demeanor are a wonderful combination.  Reese made her way to WHS-WARL from a shelter in Alabama and has made friends quickly here in D.C.  Stop by the adoption center at 71 Oglethorpe St. and meet this happy pup today. (Washington Humane Society/Washington Animal Rescue League)
Cat of the Week: Firecracker For the week of Oct. 3  Meet Firecracker, a lovely little lady who will add some spark to your life! This 3-year-old domestic short-hair cat found herself at the Washington Humane Society-Washington Animal Rescue League after a Good Samaritan discovered her abandoned in a cardboard box. Despite this indignity, Firecracker prefers to focus on the positive aspects of life. She enjoys her accommodations in Kitty City (although she’d prefer a “real” home) and interacting with staff and volunteers. She likes affection and being petted but sometimes prefers just taking a catnap in the sun by herself. If you’re looking for a feline companion who knows her own mind and is more independent than needy, stop by the Oglethorpe Adoption Center and meet Firecracker. You’ll be glad you did. (Washington Humane Society/Washington Animal Rescue League)
Pet of the Week: Buzz Lightyear  For the week of Sept. 26
Meet Buzz Lightyear, an active 1-year-old looking for an equally active human companion. Although he’s full grown, Buzz is still very much a puppy. He’s lively and playful with energy to burn … definitely more of a running companion than a couch potato. Buzz is also smart and very treat motivated — especially by peanut butter — and has already learned how to sit, lie down and give a paw. If you’re looking for a happy boy to share life’s adventures with, stop by the Oglethorpe Adoption Center of the Washington Humane Society-Washington Animal Rescue League and meet Buzz Lightyear. You won’t regret it! (Washington Humane Society/Washington Animal Rescue League)

Cat of the Week: Chunky Monkey For the week of Sept. 26 You might not expect a cat named Chunky Monkey to be devastatingly handsome, but this boy is that and more. In addition to stunning good looks, this 2-year-old domestic medium hair feline has a personality to match: social, friendly, and outgoing. It’s hard to believe this paragon of feline charm comes from the streets of D.C., where he was beaten up by other cats. But if it hadn’t been for the call to the Washington Humane Society-Washington Animal Rescue League from a Good Samaritan, Chunky Monkey might still be out there. Instead, he’s enjoying the comfort of Kitty City, where he’s become a favorite with staff and volunteers. He’ll solicit attention by rubbing himself against your legs, offering head butts and curling up in your lap. All Chunky Monkey needs now to complete his rags-to-riches story is a loving home with an adoring human companion. If you think that might be you, stop by the New York Avenue Adoption Center to meet him soon! (Washington Humane Society/Washington Animal Rescue League )
Pet of the Week: Honey For the week of Sept. 19 Meet Honey, a dog who’s as sweet as her name. This 4-year-old Labrador/beagle mix was picked up as a stray and is now in the care of the Washington Humane Society-Washington Animal Rescue League while she waits for a forever home — one that doesn’t equate food with love. Honey obviously ate far more than she should have before she arrived at WHS-WARL, but she’s now on a controlled diet and has already dropped 9 pounds. This mellow girl is looking for a human companion who will continue to help her on her weight-loss journey. She enjoys going for leisurely walks and although highly active dogs would likely be too much for her, she might enjoy an easygoing canine training partner.  If you’re looking for a gentle, loving young adult dog to share your life, stop by the Oglethorpe Adoption Center and meet Honey. (Washington Humane Society/Washington Animal Rescue League)
Pet of the Week: June For the week of Sept. 19 Meet June: a beautiful tortoiseshell cat named for the month she arrived at the Washington Humane Society-Washington Animal Rescue League. June was found as a stray and gave birth within a week of her arrival at WHS-WARL. She was a wonderful, caring mother who took exceptional care of her three kittens — all of whom have since been adopted. Now it’s June’s turn! This petite 2-year-old is a social butterfly who loves attention and playing with toys — especially those on a string. She’s an adventurous soul who would love a dog-free home of her own in which to explore. When it’s time for a break, she’ll happily regale you with tales of her discoveries. If you’re looking for a beautiful, personable feline friend to share your life, stop by the Oglethorpe Adoption Center and ask for June. She’ll be waiting. (Washington Humane Society/Washington Animal Rescue League )
Pet of the Week: Romeo  For the week of Sept. 12 O Romeo, Romeo, wherefore art thou Romeo? Well, this Romeo is currently residing at the New York Avenue adoption center of the Washington Humane Society-Washington Animal Rescue League. He was reluctantly surrendered by his human companion, whose living situation changed suddenly. This handsome Lab mix was understandably confused by his change in circumstances and overwhelmed by shelter life, but thanks to extra attention from staff and volunteers, his happy, fun-loving personality has begun to shine! At 3 years old, Romeo is past the exhausting — sometimes annoying — puppy stage, but still has lots of energy and enthusiasm! So if you’re looking for a wonderful canine companion whose tail never stops wagging, you’ll want to meet Romeo. Stop by the New York Avenue adoption center soon! (Photo courtesy Washington Humane Society/Washington Animal Rescue League)
Cat of the Week: Taz For the week of Sept. 12 At just 5 years old, Taz has already had a roller coaster of a life. This handsome tabby was originally brought to the Washington Humane Society-Washington Animal Rescue League as a tiny, unweaned kitten after being discovered hungry and dehydrated inside the wall of a vacant apartment. He was then adopted by a loving family who adored him! Sadly, a change in the family’s circumstances meant they could no longer care for him, and they reluctantly returned him to WHS-WARL. After years in a home, Taz has found life in Kitty City somewhat stressful, and spends most of his time in his own tower. But he adores human companionship and will climb in your lap almost immediately if given a chance, pushing his head under your hand to encourage stroking. Please let Taz know that he’s still loveable and deserving of another chance at happiness! Stop by the Ogelthorpe Adoption Center and meet him soon.  (Courtesy Washington Humane Society-Washington Animal Rescue League)
Pet of the Week: Jessie For the week of Sept. 6  Plenty of women pay lots of money to get smokey eyes like Jessie’s, but this lucky girl was born with them. Jessie is a 2-year-old retriever mix who arrived at the Washington Humane Society-Washington Animal Rescue League from Virginia. She’s a bit shy, but very sweet: Just give her some time and she’ll reward you with cuddles and kisses. Jessie is selective about her canine companions, so she might prefer a home where she has her human companion’s undivided attention and affection. Like many dogs who were not given heartworm preventative, Jessie is heartworm positive, but that shouldn’t deter you from welcoming this girl into your heart and home. You can adopt her outright and take her to the veterinarian of your choice, or “foster to adopt,” with WHS-WARL covering the cost of her treatment at its medical center. Don’t let this beauty get away! Stop by the Oglethorpe Adoption Center and meet Jessie today.  (Courtesy Washington Humane Society-Washington Animal Rescue League)
Cat(s) of the Week: Rick and Sia  For the week of Sept. 6  Meet Rick and Sia, two handsome boys looking for loving homes — preferably together. To look at them, you’d never know these BFFs once lived in a hoarding situation with more than 40 other cats. But when they first arrived at the Washington Humane Society-Washington Animal Rescue League, they were scared, confused and not socialized; Rick would even hiss and swat at people who tried to interact with him. Thanks to the dedicated efforts of WHS-WARL behavior and training staff, however, Rick and Sia have blossomed!  Rick, a 2-year-old orange tabby, is sweet and incredibly affectionate. He loves to have his head and cheeks rubbed and will lean in and roll over on his side for attention. Sia, 1-year-old, fancies himself a private investigator; he enjoys playing, climbing, investigating and learning new things. Because of their background, both boys can be a little shy in new environments, although they acclimate quickly. And like all the cats from the hoarding situation, they are more relaxed when near another feline, relying on each other for social and emotional support. Rick and Sia would love a home with human companions who will continue working on building their confidence through positive reinforcement training. And if you adopt one WHS-WARL cat, you can adopt a second with fees waived, so please consider opening your heart and home to Rick AND Sia. They’re waiting for you at the WHS-WARL Oglethorpe Adoption Center.  (Courtesy Washington Humane Society-Washington Animal Rescue League)
Pet of the Week: Denver  For the week of Aug. 29 Meet Denver. Denver is a 3-year-old Border Collie/Australian Shepherd mix with a very handsome brown-and-black coat and sweet, welcoming eyes. He is a very happy pup that loves to meet new people, and is anxious to find a new home. Visitors meeting Denver will see that all it takes is a kind word or a pat on the head to get his tail wagging like crazy. Denver is cautious around other dogs, especially with highly energetic or “pushy” dogs, so he would prefer a home where he is the only dog or a home with a dog that is laid back and accepting. Denver is approximately 40 pounds — the perfect size for your home! Come on out to the WHS-WARL Oglethorpe Adoption Center and meet Denver.  (Courtesy Washington Humane Society-Washington Animal Rescue League)
Pet of the Week: Marzipan For the week of Aug. 22 Meet Marzipan, who is just as sweet as her name suggests. This gentle Lab mix lived with the same family her whole life, but ended up at the Washington Humane Society-Washington Animal Rescue League when they could no longer care for her. While she waits for someone to fall in love with her — and that’s not hard to do — she’s being doted on by staff and volunteers. Because she lived with small children and other dogs, Marzipan would be a great addition to a family that’s looking to add to their “pack.” At 9 years old, she’s well past all the puppy nonsense, while still having a lot of life left to live — and love to give. Although Marzipan definitely enjoys getting out of the house and taking leisurely walks, she’s more of a mellow companion than a running buddy. She can’t hear very well, but don’t worry; her sense of smell is second to none, and if she smells some cheese in your hand, you’ll have her undivided attention. Do you have room in your heart and home for a sweet, gentle dog? If so, stop by the WHS-WARL Oglethorpe Adoption Center soon to meet Marzipan. And be prepared for some sweet canine kisses! If you’re over 50, Marzipan’s adoption fee will be waived as part of our Boomers’ Buddies program.  (Courtesy Washington Humane Society-Washington Animal Rescue League)
Pet of the Week: Wolverine For the week of Aug. 22 Wolverine may be named after a ferocious animal, but this boy is one sweet pussy cat. He’s had a bit of bad luck recently because his owners moved and couldn’t take him with them. But staff and volunteers at the Washington Humane Society-Washington Animal Rescue League are sure he’ll find a new home soon. In addition to being incredibly handsome, Wolverine has a charming personality to match. He’s a very gentle boy who loves attention from people of any age, and will give you a few affectionate head butts to get your’s. At 2 years old, he’s also a perfect age: young, but past the pesky kitten stage, with many years of friendship and fun times ahead. If you’re looking for a stunning, debonair feline companion, stop by the WHS-WARL Oglethorpe Adoption Center and meet Wolverine.  (Courtesy Washington Humane Society-Washington Animal Rescue League)
Mystique is low-key and is great on a leash, and she is this week's Pet of the Week. (Courtesy Washington Humane Society-Washington Animal Rescue League)
Pet of the Week: Mystique For the week of Aug. 15 Meet Mystique: This 5 year-old beagle/basset mix has just completed an extraordinary task — raising eight puppies! Mystique and her brood received a great deal of notoriety on our “puppy cam,” as the pups spent their first weeks of life under mom’s care in front of millions. Now that the puppies are weaned, Mystique is ready to find her forever home. She’s extremely polite and mellow, walks great on a leash and loves to be by your side.  She doesn’t need constant exercise, just a few quality walks each day. If you’re looking for a low key, low energy companion who is ready to live the easy life for awhile, Mystique might be just for you! Come visit her at our Oglethorpe Street adoption center. This sweet girl can’t wait to snuggle up on the couch with you.  (Courtesy Washington Humane Society-Washington Animal Rescue League)
With a name like Cookie, you know this girl must be sweet.
Pet of the Week: Cookie  For the week of Aug. 8  With a name like Cookie, you know this girl must be sweet. In fact, staff at the Washington Humane Society-Washington Animal Rescue League thinks this shepherd mix is just about perfect! At 9 years old, Cookie may not be the athlete she once was, but that might be considered a good thing. She no longer tugs on the leash, chases squirrels, tries to jump fences, or demands lots of physical activity. All it takes to make this gentle, low-key girl happy is a soft bed, some yummy treats, the opportunity to spend time with her people … and an occasional walk through the neighborhood. So if you’re looking for a loving canine companion to curl up with you as you watch TV, play a computer game, or write the next great American novel, Cookie is your girl. Stop by the WHS-WARL Oglethorpe Adoption Center and meet her soon. And remember, if you’re over 50, her adoption fee will be waived as part of our Boomers’ Buddies program. Pet of the Week: Be Mine For the week of Aug. 8

Be Mine wants to be yours. Following surgery for an overactive thyroid, this sweet senior is feeling happy and healthy and ready for a home of her own.

She’s a friendly, playful girl who adores people and would like nothing better than to curl up in your lap while you watch your favorite soap opera, historical drama or Olympic event.

While she’s lived with other animals, Be Mine would love the chance to be someone’s one and only …  although she might be willing to share with another calm, low-key kitty.

If you’re looking for a gentle, refined, “golden girl” to be the love of your life, stop by the Oglethorpe Adoption Center of the Washington Humane Society-Washington Animal Rescue League and make Be Mine yours! (Courtesy Washington Humane Society-Washington Animal Rescue League)

Eve is a bit timid — who can blame her — but very, very sweet!
Pet of the Week: Eve For the week of Aug. 1 They say beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Well, everyone at the Washington Humane Society-Washington Animal Rescue League who has met little Eve agrees she is indeed beautiful … despite her mangled ears. At only 4 months old, this little shepherd mix was the victim of the cruel practice of home ear cropping, often performed without anesthesia in an unsterile environment. Not surprisingly, Eve’s ears were infected when she arrived at an Alabama shelter. But thanks to good medical care, she has recovered and faces a bright future. Eve is a bit timid — who can blame her — but very, very sweet! She’ll wiggle right over and climb in your lap for cuddles and even give gentle little kisses in return. She’d love nothing better than a loving home with patient people who will show her that the world truly can be her Garden of Eden. Eve will be available for adoption later this week at the WHS-WARL Oglethorpe Adoption Center.   (Courtesy Washington Humane Society/Washington Animal Rescue League)
Pet of the Week: Beaxtrix For the week of Aug. 1 Meet Beaxtrix, a beautiful blue-grey cat with breathtaking green-gold eyes currently available for adoption at the Washington Humane Society-Washington Animal Rescue League. At some point in her life, this 4-year-old girl was declawed. And although we’ll never know for sure, we think her resulting inability to defend herself has made her fearful of — and miserable around — other felines. Not surprisingly, life in Kitty City was incredibly stressful for Beatrix, so she’s now spending quiet, quality time as an office foster, where she’s quickly blossoming into a lovely, delightful cat who enjoys human company and all the attention it brings. She’s an inquisitive girl who likes to explore every nook and cranny when not stretching out on an office chair. Still … an office isn’t a home, which is what sweet Beatrix would really like. So if you’re looking for a quiet but social feline companion with whom to share your life, please stop by the WHS-WARL Oglethorpe Adoption Center and ask to meet Beatrix. You’ll be glad you did!  (Courtesy Washington Humane Society/Washington Animal Rescue League)   (Washington Humane Society/Washington Animal Rescue League )
Pet of the Week: Marcus For the week of July 25 Marcus hasn’t had the best start in life. Last month, our Humane Law Enforcement Officers found him living in squalid conditions, emaciated and sick. With the help of our dedicated medical team, medical partners, and animal care staff, he’s now ready to go home! This 1-year-old could use some etiquette classes and an experienced dog owner, because this big guy likes to be on top of you – and he doesn’t care how that happens! If you are up for a bit of a challenge, Marcus is ready to learn how to be the best he can be with you. Visit our Oglethorpe Adoption Center to meet this silly boy. You won’t regret it! We’re open from noon to 7 p.m., Tuesday through Sunday. (Courtesy Washington Humane Society/Washington Animal Rescue League)
Haiti is this week's Pet of the Week. (Courtesy Washington Humane Society/Washington Animal Rescue League)
Pet of the Week: Haiti  For the week of July 18 Haiti is the ultimate gal pal. She’ll listen to you complain about your boyfriend, be there for bottomless brunch on Sundays, and she’ll even go glamping with you. This sweet 2-year-old is still working on her bikini body, but with the right home, we know she’ll thrive. Haiti likes nice long jogs, playing with her doggy friends and relaxing with her human friends. She’s a low-maintenance friend, but that doesn’t mean she’s lazy. Haiti follows her nose wherever she goes and there’s a never-ending pep to her step. We aren’t kidding – she’s the full package. Are you the perfect gal (or guy!) for Haiti? Adopt her from our Oglethorpe Adoption Center today.  (Courtesy Washington Humane Society/Washington Animal Rescue League)

This 1-year-old dog has the low-slung body of a corgi or Basset hound, the wrinkled skin of a Shar Pei and a face all his own. (Courtesy Washington Humane Society/Washington Animal Rescue League)
Pet of the Week: Rhino For the week of July 11 OK, let’s be honest: Rhino looks a bit like a science experiment gone wrong … in the most adorable way! This 1-year-old dog has the low-slung body of a corgi or Basset hound, the wrinkled skin of a Shar Pei and a face all his own. He also happens to be one of the happiest dogs you’ll ever meet! Although he loves to investigate (his nose is pretty close to all those interesting ground smells), he’ll be in your lap the minute you sit down. Rhino likes dogs as much as people although his demands to play can be a bit much for less-energetic dogs. He’d love to go home with a family who will give him the love and attention he deserves. Pet of the Week: Gump For the week of July 5 Remember the 1989 movie “Turner and Hooch,” in which star Tom Hanks was upstaged — and slobbered on — by a really large dog? Well, that dog was a Dogue de Bordeaux, more commonly known as a French mastiff, and the Washington Humane Society/Washington Animal Rescue League has not one, but two, of them available for adoption. Bubba and his brother, Gump, are 4 years old and everything French mastiffs should be: big, handsome and wrinkly. Despite their impressive size, they’re a bit timid … but very sweet. Are you interested in sharing your life — and perhaps your sofa — with a large canine companion? Then stop by the WHS/WARL Oglethorpe Adoption Center and meet Bubba and Gump today! Cookie Monster is this week's Pet of the Week. (Courtesy Washington Humane Society/Washington Animal Rescue League)
Pet of the Week: Cookie Monster For the week of June 27 The Pet of the Week is (almost) 2-year-old Cookie Monster. She came to the Washington Animal Rescue League in 2015 as a stray wearing a Cookie Monster T-shirt (hence her name), and was surrendered earlier this month because her adopter could no longer care for her. She is a little bummed about not being in her own home right now, but knows that the right family is out there for her. Cookie Monster is a bit shy, but loves to hike, jog and cuddle. She has lived with adults, kids, seniors and other dogs. Cookie Monster is classified as a “hidden gem,” which means her adoption fee is waived. And a little secret … She is, in fact, not a Cookie Monster. The only treats she likes are Pupperoni. Come by the Oglethorpe Adoption Center and meet Cookie Monster today! (Courtesy Washington Humane Society/Washington Animal Rescue League)
Pet of the Week: Bailey For the week of June 20 Say hello to Bailey! He is a gorgeous 9-year-old Australian Shepherd mix who lived with his loving family for nine years until they could no longer take care of him. If you think being 9 renders him a senior citizen, you thought wrong: He’s an active dude who loves going on walks, hikes, runs, and anything in between. When he’s not playing around, you can find him lounging in the sun. That sounds like a pretty good life, if you ask us. The other thing about Bailey is that he loves other dogs. He loves other dogs so much that it’s actually a requirement that his new home have a buddy for him. If you’ve been looking for a second (or third or fourth) dog, Bailey is the man for you. You can find him at our Oglethorpe Adoption Center — Adopt him today! (Courtesy Washington Humane Society/Washington Animal Rescue League)
Pet of the Week: Bailey For the week of June 20 The folks at Washington Humane Society/Washington Animal Rescue League made a video for Bailey! Head to the Oglethorpe Adoption Center and adopt this cutie today! (Courtesy Washington Humane Society/Washington Animal Rescue League)
Cat of the Week: Valentina  For the week of June 20 Valentina, a 3-year-old Tortie, is the sweetest cat Her fur is as soft as velvet and she loves to cuddle.  If you are looking for the epitome of a lap cat or a cuddle bunny, Valentina is your gal.  She’s on the shy side, so a quiet, stress-free home with no other animals would be best for her to feel comfortable and relaxed. She is currently in foster, so if you are ready to meet your new best friend just email Lisa at lisa.stemcosky@warl.org or adopt@warl.org to arrange a meeting. Meet Rocko, a handsome, happy-go-lucky, pit bull terrier mix. (Washington Humane Society/Washington Animal Rescue League)
Pet of the Week: Rocko For the week of June 13 Are you looking for a happy, fun-loving canine companion with whom you can share some great adventures? Then look no further than Rocko. This handsome 1.5-year-old boy is active, playful and social. He is also — despite his size — something of a lap dog who loves to give kisses. No one at the Washington Humane Society/Washington Animal Rescue League can understand why he’s still waiting for his forever home. Seriously, he’s a great dog! Rocko would love to live with an active adult (and maybe a teen or two) who can give him the love, guidance and exercise he deserves. He’s lived with other dogs and might do well with a new companion, but would be just as happy to have all the human attention and affection to himself. Please don’t make Rocko wait any longer: Stop by the Oglethorpe Adoption Center and meet him today.  (Washington Humane Society/Washington Animal Rescue League)
Cat of the Week: Mr. Wilson For the week of June 13   Are you one of those “dog” people who has always wondered what it would be like to have a feline companion? If you are, we have the perfect cat for you! Mr. Wilson is a big, handsome, easygoing kind of guy who wants nothing more than to hang out and have fun. Think of him as “Mr. Personality.” He’s friendly and social, but also kind of chill. He makes himself at home wherever he is, whether that’s with a single companion or a large group of adoring fans. Like the former high school quarterback who hasn’t worked out in a while, Mr. Wilson could stand to lose a couple of pounds. But because he’s active and playful, that won’t be hard; in fact, he’s already slimming down under the watchful eyes of staff at the Washington Humane Society/Washington Animal Rescue League. Mr. Wilson is available at the WHS/WARL Oglethorpe Adoption Center. At 8 years old, he qualifies for our Boomers’ Buddies program, which means his adoption fee will be waived for adopters over 50. So stop by and meet this loveable hunk soon.  (Washington Humane Society/Washington Animal Rescue League)
Pet of the Week: Diamond  For the week of June 6 You’ve heard the saying, “a diamond in the rough.” Well there’s nothing rough about our Pet of the Week. This Diamond is already polished and just about perfect. We’re guessing this 2-and-a-half-year-old girl is a Rottie/retriever mix. And we know with certainty that she’s incredibly sweet. She loves people of all ages and wants nothing more than to be around them. She also enjoys a good book … especially when it’s being read to her while she’s lying in your lap. Diamond is fine with other dogs as long as they keep their distance, although she’d rather not share a home with them. But that shouldn’t be a problem since with a dog as wonderful as Diamond, you’ll never need another. She’s been waiting patiently for someone to recognize how special she is, so please stop by the Oglethorpe Adoption Center of the Washington Humane Society/Washington Animal Rescue League and meet her soon. Remember, a Diamond is a girl’s (and guy’s) best friend. (Washington Humane Society/Washington Animal Rescue League)

Pet of the Week: Gong For the week of May 30 Whoever said, “eyes are the window to the soul,” got it wrong when it comes to our pet of the week, Gong. The eyes of this miniature poodle mix may be opaque but her soul is crystal clear for all to see. This 7-plus-year-old girl is sweetness personified. She’s friendly, trusting, and social and wants nothing more than to be with you … preferably in your lap. And although she can’t see, she’s too busy enjoying life to feel sorry for herself. Gong would love a quiet, orderly home, perhaps with a calm canine companion who can “show” her the ropes. If you’re looking for a small, adoring dog, stop by the Oglethorpe Adoption Center of the Washington Humane Society/Washington Animal Rescue League and meet Gong today. If you’re over 50, her adoption fee will be waived as part of our Boomers’ Buddies program. (Washington Humane Society/Washington Animal Rescue League)

Tiny “Gong” came into the Glass Enclosed Nerve Center at WTOP in D.C. with the Washington Animal Rescue League’s Alix John to talk about the tiny affectionate poodle, who is blind, and looking for a quiet home. (Washington Humane Society/Washington Animal Rescue League)
Cat of the Week: Diva  For the week of May 31 Meet Diva, who, by the way, isn’t one. This pretty 6-year-old girl found herself at the shelter after her elderly owner passed away. She was obviously well loved and consequently enjoys being stroked and scratched while purring constantly. Sadly, her human companion was apparently of the belief that food equals love, so Diva is currently carrying several extra pounds. She’d love a new human companion who would help her trim down while showing her lots of affection in other ways. Could that be you? Stop by the Oglethorpe Adoption Center of the Washington Humane Society/Washington Animal Rescue League to meet Diva and find out. (Washington Humane Society/Washington Animal Rescue League)
Pet of the Week: Van Winkle  For the week of May 23 Unlike his namesake Rip, this Van Winkle has no intention of sleeping his life away. He’s a 1-year-old Argentine Dogo mix — a big boy with lots of enthusiasm and energy to spare! And his joie de vivre is contagious: There’s no way you could have a down day with this happy-go-lucky dog around. Given his size and exuberance, Van Winkle can be a bit much for little folks, so he’s looking for a home with active adults (and maybe a teenager or two) who will give him plenty of exercise and continue to work on his canine manners. Could that be you? Stop by the Oglethorpe Adoption Center of the Washington Humane Society/Washington Animal Rescue League this week and find out! (Washington Humane Society/Washington Animal Rescue League)
Cat of the Week: Tequila  For the week of May 23 Tequila isn’t just for sunrises. This beautiful girl is the perfect kitty companion for any time of day! Basically, she’s the complete package: sweet, social and secure. She’s a chatty girl who actually chirps when she’s happy. She loves people and will come running when you call her name. Tequila also fancies herself something of an investigator and enjoys exploring her surroundings when not playing with her favorite string toys. If you’re looking for a cat who will greet you at the door and who looks forward to talking about her day and hearing about yours, Tequila is the girl for you. Stop by the Oglethorpe Adoption Center of the Washington Humane Society/Washington Animal Rescue League to meet her. (Washington Humane Society/Washington Animal Rescue League )
Pet of the Week: Houston   For the week of May 16 Houston is one of those dogs whose ancestry is a true mystery to everyone but his mother … and maybe even to her. The shape of his head and his build resemble that of a bulldog, while the color and texture of his fur suggest shepherd.  What we can say with authority is that Houston is a really nice boy! He seems to like everyone … both people and other dogs, despite what we imagine was a rough start in life. His teeth need some work, he needs to put on a few pounds and his tail appears to have been badly docked at some point, but once this sweet 6-year-old looks at you with his big brown eyes and puts his paws up on you, that stubby tail wagging, nothing else matters. You just know you have a friend for life! Please stop by the Oglethorpe Adoption Center of the Washington Humane Society/Washington Animal Rescue League and meet Houston. His adoption fee will be waived thanks to the sponsorship of a generous donor. (Photo courtesy Washington Humane Society/Washington Animal Rescue League) ((Photo courtesy Washington Humane Society/Washington Animal Rescue League) )
Pet of the Week: Lizzo  For the week of May 16 Lizzo is a stunningly beautiful cat who is feeling a bit lost at the shelter. He spent virtually all of his three years in a loving home but found himself at the Washington Humane Society/Washington Animal Rescue League when his human companion developed severe asthma. Of course, he doesn’t understand that. Upon arrival, he decided to ignore the world around him, preferring the security of his condo to explorations of Kitty City or interaction with staff and volunteers. Behavior and training staff decided Lizzo would be a perfect candidate for the Jackson Galaxy Foundation’s “Cat Pawsitive” Program. As part of this program, which aims to increase the adoptability of shelter cats, staff are working with Lizzo on targeting — rewarding him for touching his nose to their hands or marking their hands with his cheek — in an effort to build his self-confidence and encourage engagement. And he’s already making strides, spending more time outside the “cubbyhole” portion of his condo and venturing out into the larger world of Kitty City. Now this beautiful boy is looking for a quiet, loving home with people who will give him the time he needs to acclimate to new surroundings and the gentle encouragement he needs to continue to blossom. Could that be yours? Stop by the WHS/WARL Oglethorpe Adoption Center to meet Lizzo and find out. (Photo courtesy Washington Humane Society/Washington Animal Rescue League) ((Photo courtesy Washington Humane Society/Washington Animal Rescue League))
Pet of the Week: Charlie Brown   For the week of May 9

There’s something special about Charlie Brown.

Like the Peanuts character for which he’s named, this beagle mix is sweet, uncomplicated and accepting of what life has to offer. Simply put, he’s a good boy.

Like most hounds, Charlie Brown loves to sniff! He also loves hanging out with people, being stroked and petted. He’s a mature boy — we’re guessing 7 to 10 years — and has excellent manners: He sits on command, takes treats gently and doesn’t pull on the leash.

He wants nothing more than a home where he can spend time with his special someone. Could you be his “little red-haired girl?” Stop by the Oglethorpe Adoption Center of the Washington Humane Society/Washington Animal Rescue League and find out!   (Photo courtesy Washington Humane Society/Washington Animal Rescue League)  (Washington Humane Society/Washington Animal Rescue League)

Pet of the Week: Nisha   For the week of May 9   Hello, my name is Nisha. Although I’m only 2 years old (or so I’ve been told), I’ve had to grow up fast. I was living alone on the streets of D.C. (don’t ask) until some nice people brought me to the Washington Humane Society/Washington Animal Rescue League. It’s nice to have a warm, comfortable place to sleep, good food to eat and lots of entertaining toys. I love toys! So life is pretty good, but I’d still rather have a home of my own and a person of my own. Could that be you? Stop by the Oglethorpe Adoption Center and let’s find out. (Photo courtesy Washington Humane Society/Washington Animal Rescue League) ((Photo courtesy Washington Humane Society/Washington Animal Rescue League) )
Pet of the Week: Macaw  For the week of May 2  He may have been named for a regal-looking bird with a long, impressive tail, but this little Macaw couldn’t be more different. First, he’s definitely not regal; rather, he’s a silly, short-legged, wiggle-butt of a dog who greets visitors with some impressive rear-end action. He also has almost no tail at all…the result of an early amputation for medical reasons. But regal or not, Macaw will grab your attention and capture your heart with his happy, playful personality and adorable underbite.  He prefers human companionship to that of other dogs so he’s looking for a home where he can be the only pet (more petting for him, he says). If you’re looking for a cheerful, medium-sized dog to share your life with, stop by the Oglethorpe Adoption Center of the Washington Humane Society/Washington Animal Rescue League and meet Macaw! Pet of the Week: Brooke

For the week of April 25

Just one look at Brooke's sweet expression and you’ll fall for this one-year-old Shepherd/retriever mix! And she’s more than just a pretty face: This energetic girl has a zest for life that’s contagious. Although her physical activities are being restricted at the moment as she undergoes treatment for heartworm, she’s looking forward to the day when she can play and run around a large yard to her heart’s content. Like most athletic types, Brooke also enjoys her downtime, preferably near -- or on -- her person. She’ll push her head into your hands to encourage neck and ear scratching and will return the favor with a gentle lick. Given her exuberant personality, Brooke would be too much for young children but would love a family with adults, teenagers, and perhaps a canine companion. Could that be yours? Stop by the Oglethorpe Adoption Center of the Washington Humane Society/Washington Animal Rescue League today to meet Brooke and find out. The center is at 71 Oglethorpe St. in Northwest D.C.

Pet of the Week: Sue

For the week of April 25

Sweet, sad Sue is pining for her human companion, who passed away not long ago. After many years as a beloved feline friend, this 11-year-old girl is understandably finding shelter life stressful and confusing. She really needs a quiet home where she can spend her golden years in comfort and rediscover the joys of being someone’s true love. We’re betting she’ll return the favor with years of affection and companionship. If you’re interested in bringing joy to Sue’s life, stop by the Oglethorpe Adoption Center of the Washington Humane Society/Washington Animal Rescue League, at 71 Oglethorpe St. in Northwest D.C.

Pet of the week: River For the week of April 18 Meet River, a pint-size terrier mix with a big personality! Not even a year old and this little girl has already done time behind bars — for the best possible reason. River was one of four dogs in the care of the Washington Humane Society/Washington Animal Rescue League to be chosen for the Prison Dog Program at The Patuxent Institution. She spent 10 weeks living with two inmates, who taught her such skills as sit, down, stand, come, stay, go to your mat, and leave-it. She also learned how to give a paw on command and began learning to spin. Now that she has “graduated,” River would love to continue training and learning new things with a human companion –one who doesn’t already have another dog.  Could that be you? Stop by 71 Oglethorpe St., Northwest, Adoption Center of Washington Humane Society/Washington Animal Rescue League and find out. Pet of the week: Mistletoe For the week of April 18 Meet Mistletoe, a sweet, young girl looking for her furrrever home! This pretty calico is only 3 years old, but has an old soul to match her old-school beauty marks. Slow to warm up, Mistletoe enjoys rolling around carpets and napping in gym bags. She loves morning snuggles in bed but will leave her people to their own devices during the day — the perfect cat for a working family! Mistletoe is currently in the care of the Washington Humane Society/Washington Animal Rescue League. To meet her, just contact her foster moms at northwestcathouse@gmail.com. George may be a Bernese mountain dog mix, although only his mother knows for sure. (Washington Humane Society/Washington Animal Rescue League)
Pet of the Week: George For the week of April 11 We think this handsome hunk of a dog may be a Bernese mountain dog mix, although only his mother knows for sure. We can say with assurance that he is sweet and affectionate and, despite his large size, considers himself a lap dog. If you sit on the floor, he’s likely to put both paws on your shoulders and give you a hug before climbing into your lap for a cuddle. George prefers people to dogs and is looking for a home where he can be someone’s “one and only.” And, seriously, given his affectionate, loyal nature, he’ll give you more than enough canine companionship. At 5 years old, George qualifies for the Boomers’ Buddies program of the Washington Humane Society/Washington Animal Rescue League, which means his adoption fee will be waived for adopters older than 50. So stop by the Oglethorpe Street Northwest Adoption Center and meet George. You’ll be glad you did! (Washington Humane Society/Washington Animal Rescue League)
Pet of the week: Pepper For the week of April 11 This beautiful, round-faced, grey girl was found wandering the streets of D.C. Although she’s settling into her digs at Kitty City, she’d really like a home of her own. Pepper likes being stroked and scratched, and she likes playing with toys. At 5 years old, she qualifies for the Boomers’ Buddies program of the Washington Humane Society/Washington Animal Rescue League, which means her adoption fee will be waived for adopters older than 50. So if you’re looking for a feline friend, stop  by 71 Oglethorpe St. Northwest and meet Pepper! She’ll be waiting.
Elizabeth, a 4-year-old German shepherd mix, is one of the many dogs at the WHS/WARL Oglethorpe adoption center. (Courtesy WARL)
Pet of the Week: Elizabeth For the week of April 4 Is this girl beautiful or what? We certainly think so! But Elizabeth is more than just a pretty face. This 4-year-old German shepherd mix is a real lady. She’s gentle, calm and oh so sweet … and her tail wags constantly! Elizabeth isn’t the worldly type, so she’s a bit timid in new environments, but once she gets acclimated, she blossoms. Although Elizabeth is heartworm positive, the Washington Humane Society/Washington Animal Rescue League will cover the cost of her treatment, so don’t let that deter you. Just one look in her beautiful brown eyes and you’ll want this girl for your own. Stop by the Washington Humane Society/Washington Animal Rescue League Oglethorpe adoption center and meet Elizabeth today. (Courtesy WARL)
Bebe is a playful girl who enjoys toys and, unlike some cats, she can get along with friendly dogs. She is one of the many cats at the Washington Humane Society/Washington Animal Rescue League. (Courtesy WARL)
Pet of the week: Bebe For the week of April 4 Bebe is a lovely Tortie lass who had to leave her home when her owner developed severe allergies. She is a wonderful, affectionate cat who is old enough to be a mature lady of manners, but young enough to have many years of friendship to give to you. Bebe is a playful girl who enjoys toys and, unlike some cats, she can get along with friendly dogs. So if you’re looking for a special feline friend, stop by and meet this beautiful and loving girl at the Oglethorpe adoption center of the Washington Humane Society/Washington Animal Rescue League. Pet of the Week: Dogwood

Meet Dogwood, a sweet six-year-old Lab mix who yearns for a home of his own. Just one look into this sweet boy’s eyes will show how desperately he wants to be loved, but, sadly, he’s not sure whether it’ll happen. Dogwood is looking for that special someone who will be patient and gentle with him and will help build his self-confidence so he can truly enjoy all that life has to offer. Could that be you? Stop by the Oglethorpe Street NW shelter of the Washington Humane Society/Washington Animal Rescue League to meet this deserving boy and find out. And if you’re over 50, his adoption fee will be waived as part of our Boomers’ Buddies program! (Courtesy WARL)

Kara is a gorgeous brown-and-grey tabby cat who arrived at the Oglethorpe facility of the Washington Humane Society/Washington Animal Rescue League from an overcrowded partner shelter. This lovely girl is quiet and curious and would love a new home to explore. (She’s already discovered the joys of a comfy bed all her own!) Although five years is young for a cat, it still qualifies Kara for the Boomers’ Buddies program, which means her adoption fee will be waived for anyone over 50. Stop by the shelter and meet Kara soon! (Courtesy WARL)

Say hello to Chestnut, a hound mix with big, beautiful brown eyes. This handsome boy is 1.5 years old and still has lots of playful puppy energy. He can’t wait to find a home with an active family that will exercise him and teach him doggy etiquette. Chestnut is a happy guy who adores people! Although he likes some dogs, he’s not so fond of others, so he’ll be better suited to nice, long walks with his person than to dog park roughhousing. And time to run off-leash in his own backyard would be pretty nice, too! If you’re looking for a young, exuberant dog who loves all life has to offer, stop by the Oglethorpe Street, NW, shelter of the Washington Humane Society/Washington Animal Rescue League and meet Chestnut soon. Valentino is a handsome, three-year-old grey tabby who may—or may not—have Feline leukemia (FeLV). Huh?
Basically, he has tested positive for the virus on one test (meaning it’s still in his blood stream) and negative on the other, which means the virus has not won the fight. Some cats like Valentino eventually beat the virus while others don’t.
Currently, Valentino acts healthy and happy, if a bit bored by his seclusion in his Kitty City tower condo. He’s a smart, fun-loving boy who is finding unique ways to entertain himself, including playing with his water bowl. But what we really wants is a loving home in which to explore, either as an only cat or with other friendly FeLV-positive felines. Could that be yours? Stop by the Washington Humane Society/Washington Animal Rescue League shelter at 71 Oglethorpe Street, NW, to meet this very special boy and find out. (Courtesy WARL)

At first glance, Walnut looks like an oversized stuffed animal; perhaps a Teddy bear come to life. In reality, this handsome boy is a 1.5-year-old Chow mix who can’t wait for a forever home of his own! Walnut is pretty much the perfect dog: friendly with people and dogs, playful, and very affectionate. He’ll happily share his toys with you and then dive into your lap for some snuggling. He’s looking for a human companion who will love him, take him for walks…and brush his coat regularly. (Let’s face it, that gorgeous coat, like a great hairstyle, doesn’t just maintain itself.) Mariola is a darling two-year-old tabby with pretty white paws who ended up at the shelter when her person became ill. Not surprisingly, this sweet girl is a bit confused and intimidated by shelter life. She takes a little time to get up the courage to engage with new people but once she feels comfortable, she is oh so sweet! She loves having her neck scratched and will purr loudly to encourage more. All Mariola wants is someone to love and be loved by her. Could that be you? Stop by the Washington Humane Society-Washington Animal Rescue League shelter at 71 Oglethorpe Street, NW, Washington, DC, to meet Mariola and find out.

Pet of the week: Lucerna For the week of March 7 Meet Lucerna, a petite 1.5-year-old German shepherd mix. This darling girl can be timid, especially in new environments, but she is oh-so sweet and friendly. She loves people and other dogs. In fact, her playful nature blossoms in the company of another friendly canine. She had a great time playing in the snow with another shelter resident. Lucerna is hoping for a home with people who will help build her confidence — perhaps with a doggy playmate. In return, she’ll give many years of love and loyalty. If you’re looking for a young, sweet, playful dog, then stop by the Washington Animal Rescue League and meet Lucerna. Just one look into her big brown eyes, and you’ll be hooked. — Photo credit: The Washington Animal Rescue League (The Washington Animal Rescue League)

Pet of the week: Nosey For the week of March 7 Nosey is a beautiful, 5-year-old domestic medium-haired cat with a luxurious tuxedo coat. She’s active and inquisitive and loves to play, especially with lure toys. She’s also very affectionate and does a cute “sit pretty.” One of the Washington Animal Rescue League’s behavior and training staffers describes Nosey as “a real catch for some lucky adopter.” Could that be you? Stop by WARL and find out. Oh, and if you’re older tahn 50, Nosey’s adoption fee will be waived as part of WARL’s Boomers’ Buddies program. — Photo credit: The Washington Animal Rescue League (The Washington Animal Rescue League)

Pet of the Week: Be Mine Be Mine is a pretty white-and-gray cat with lovely green eyes. At 12 years young, this very sweet and extremely social girl is looking for someone special with whom to spend her golden years. And she doesn’t ask for much…just a lap to curl up in, a soft spot to sleep, and maybe a perch from which to watch the world go by. If you think you could provide those creature comforts, stop by the Washington Animal Rescue League and meet Be Mine. And, if you’re over 50, she could “be yours” for free as part of WARL’s Boomers’ Buddies program.
Cabbage is a darling 10-year-old male Chihuahua mix. (Courtesy WARL)
Pet of the Week: Cabbage Cabbage is proof that good things really do come in small packages! He may tip the scales at just five pounds but this little Chihuahua mix has the capacity to give—and receive—a whole lot of love! Since being picked up as a stray in a Maryland parking lot, Cabbage has become a favorite with staff and volunteers at the Washington Animal Rescue League. His happy, friendly personality is hard to resist. He loves everyone he meets and gets along with other dogs…even those much bigger than he is. Although his 10 years qualify Cabbage for senior status, he’s still got plenty of energy and is eager to enjoy his golden years with that special someone. Could that be you? Stop by WARL and find out! And by the way, if you’re over 50, Cabbage’s adoption fee will be waived as part of WARL’s Boomers’ Buddies program.
Grizz is quite the handsome hunk! This 2-year-old chocolate Lab mix is a big boy with a heart to match. He’s friendly and exuberant, and has a wonderful free spirit attitude. Grizz loves to play and when he’s had enough will look for a lap to sit in. (Nobody told him he isn’t really a lap dog.) He also likes other dogs, although his size, strength, and rough play style can be a bit much for some. Grizz is looking for adopters who believe that you can never have enough dog. In return, he’ll give a lifetime of love, loyalty, and fun! Stop by the Washington Animal Rescue League and meet Grizz soon.

Pet of the Week: Tulip

Feb. 16: Tip toe through the tulips? Well this is just what Tulip would like to do with you! Meet this sweet three year-old hound mix with a pretty light tan coat and nice disposition. She is a friendly, energetic gal who loves to take walks and smell all that the world has to offer. Tulip would prefer to skip the dog parks, as she is a bit dog selective. However she could live with calm, older dogs.
Come out to the Washington Animal Rescue League to meet Tulip, this week’s Pet of the Week. She can’t wait to meet you! (Washington Animal Rescue League)

Pet of the Week: Merry Feb. 8: Meet Merry, a sweet, four-year-old American bulldog mix who arrived at the Washington Animal Rescue League with her puppies during the winter holiday season. Now that her puppies are weaned, she’s looking forward to some “me” time in a home of her own!  Merry enjoys playing and loves to strut her stuff with a fluffy toy in her mouth. She is a bit intimidated by new people but once she knows you she’ll shower you with big sloppy dog kisses. Stop by WARL and visit Merry soon! (Courtesy WARL)
Corazon is a beautiful black-and-white cat who gazes at the world through mesmerizing, slightly crossed, green-gold eyes. This lovely 5-year-old girl arrived at the Washington Animal Rescue League from an overcrowded partner shelter and is now hoping to spend Valentine’s Day—and the rest of her life—with that special someone. Could that be you? If you’re looking for a quiet, gentle feline who prefers observing life to being in the middle of the action, you just might be. Stop by the Washington Animal Rescue League to meet Corazon and find out. (Washington Animal Rescue League)

Pet of the Week: Turkey Feb. 1: Turkey is a handsome Labrador/shepherd mix who ended up at the Washington Animal Rescue League because his family had to move and couldn’t take him with them. He’s a big, happy guy who does well with other dogs. Although he’s 8 years old, Turkey is still strong and active and would love to find a home with adopters without small children and who can handle a large dog. And if you are over the age of 50, Turkey’s adoption fee will be waived as part of WARL’s Boomers’ Buddies program. So stop by WARL and meet Turkey soon! (Courtesy WARL)

He’ll push against you to solicit attention and affection, purring loudly in response. Are you looking for a sweet, loving, loyal canine companion? If so, then look no further than Juliet. (Courtesy WARL)
Pet of the Week: Juliet  Jan. 28: Are you looking for a sweet, loving, loyal canine companion? If so, then look no further than Juliet. This pretty 4-year-old hound mix came to the Washington Animal Rescue League from a partner shelter in rural Virginia. Juliet is incredibly calm and a bit timid. And, unlike many hounds, she’s very quiet; WARL staff have yet to hear her bark. Juliet is good with dogs, cats, and rabbits, but is afraid of parrots.  She’s looking for a loving home with people who will help build her self-confidence and allow her to blossom. Could that be yours? Stop by WARL and find out.  (Courtesy WARL)
Pet of the Week: Busy Lizzie  Jan. 28: Busy Lizzie has been busy indeed — busy looking for the perfect home. She was originally brought to the Washington Animal Rescue League after a good Samaritan found her with a litter of very young kittens. She was adopted and returned once and then again, first because of a move that couldn’t accommodate pets and then because of a child’s allergy. This 3.5-year-old tabby enjoys human companionship and is more likely to be next to you on the couch than chasing after toys. She would love to find a home that really is forever. Could that be yours? Stop by WARL and find out.  (Courtesy WARL)

Pet of the Week: Lindy Jan. 19: Lindy is a 3-year-old hound mix, and she can’t wait to find a new home. From a shelter in Alabama, she is a sweet, active dog with a beautiful black-and-tan coat. Long and lean, Lindy is playful and friendly and does well with other dogs and people. Lindy would love a home that will give her lots of toys and playtime. Come by the Washington Animal Rescue League today and meet Lindy today; she can’t wait to meet you. (Courtesy WARL)

Pet of the Week: Ladybird  Jan. 11: Ladybird is an appealing “low-rider” with a look all her own. Although we can’t be sure, we’re guessing she’s got both Dachshund and Basset hound in her genetic mix. She’s a friendly, calm girl who gets along with other dogs. And she prefers companionship to being alone — but who doesn’t? At 5 years old, Ladybird qualifies for our Boomers’ Buddies program, which means her adoption fee will be waived for adopters over the age of 50. Stop by the Washington Animal Rescue League and meet this darling girl!   (Courtesy WARL)

Martha May is this week's Pet of the Week. (Courtesy WARL)
Pet of the Week: Martha May Jan. 4: Martha May is a hound/shepherd mix, with eyes that are oh-so-soulful. She has an adorable, pleading face that is so hard to resist. Martha May is a super energetic pup with a go-getter attitude. At just over 1 year, she is excitable and would benefit from training to channel her exuberance, but she is good with other dogs and loves people. Martha May is currently heartworm positive; WARL will take care of the cost of treatment, but the adopter must be willing to adhere to a heartworm treatment schedule. If Martha May sounds like your match, come out to meet her — she can’t wait to go to her forever home.

He’ll be waiting. (Courtesy WARL)
(Let’s face it, that gorgeous coat, like a great hairstyle, doesn’t just maintain itself.) If you’re looking for a great dog to share your life, stop by the Washington Humane Society-Washington Animal Rescue League shelter at 71 Oglethorpe Street, NW, and meet Walnut today! (Courtesy WARL)
Mariola is a darling two-year-old tabby with pretty white paws who ended up at the shelter when her person became ill.
