Tim Bracken, wtop.com

This Mother’s Day weekend is all about Metro delays and charity races. The three big race events will be the TriRock Triathalon, the National Police Week 5K and the Mother’s Day 5K Dash.

The weekend wouldn’t be complete without some construction. Northbound D.C. 295 will be closed Friday night through Sunday, and overnight construction will continue to cause temporary closures on Interstate 495 and Interstate 66.

Read on for the details, and have a great weekend!

Expect some serious Metro delays over the weekend, with work scheduled for the Red, Orange, and Blue Lines. All work will start Friday at 10 p.m. and continue through system closing Sunday. Here’s the summary from Metro:

Canal Road lane closures

Several lanes of Canal Road at Arizona Avenue northwest will be closed beginning 9 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Saturday.

The lane closures are needed to install a safety net under the pedestrian bridge over Canal Road near Arizona Avenue northwest.

The contractor will attempt to complete the work in one night, weather permitting.

Drivers should expect two lanes to close with two-way traffic in one lane. Flaggers will direct traffic in the work zone. Traffic delays are anticipated.

D.C.-295 weekend closure

Northbound D.C. 295 will be closed between the 11th Street Bridge and Pennsylvania Avenue, from 8 p.m. Friday until 10 a.m. Sunday.

All northbound I-295 traffic will be diverted to the inbound 11th Street Bridge. In order to continue on northbound D.C.-295, traffic will have to use the SE-SW Freeway and Pennsylvania Avenue/Sousa Bridge.

Overnight construction continues in Virginia

Watch for temporary total closures on both sides of the Beltway I-495 between the Old Dominion Drive overpass and Gallows Road. Closures could take place between 9:30 p.m. and 5 a.m. Friday and Saturday.

During the same hours, temporary closures are possible on eastbound I-66 between Nutley Street and the Beltway, and westbound I-66 between the Dulles Connector Road/Va. 267 and the Beltway.
