Va. police investigating death of 2-year-old left in car

WASHINGTON — Police are investigating the death of a 2-year-old girl who was found unresponsive in the back seat of a car in Arlington.

Detectives who responded to the scene Wednesday afternoon believe the child likely died earlier in the day in Fairfax County.

Police say a man, believed to be the boyfriend of the child’s mother, was supposed to drop three of her children off at two locations Wednesday morning.

After dropping off two older children, ages 10 and 15, the man returned to the mother’s home in Annandale, apparently not realizing the 2-year-old remained in the back seat. Police believe the child likely died in the car while it was at the Annandale home.

That afternoon, the man drove to pick up the mother from work in the area of the Pentagon City Mall, where he discovered the child and called 911.

No arrest has been made and no charges have been filed at this time, according to Fairfax County Police.

Fairfax County Child Protective Services is involved and the two older children are currently staying with a relative.
