Streaming TV still has its limits

WASHINGTON — More TV viewers are likely to become cord-cutters this year, dropping cable TV subscriptions in favor of watching TV online. But not all is smooth in cyberspace when it comes to TV.

Netflix, Hulu and Roku are a few of the streams that viewers watch for their favorite TV shows. But sometimes, the streams of big events suffer from disruptions.

Wired reports that Sling TV’s presentation of the NCAA National Championship game between Wisconsin and Kentucky Saturday night was a “sputtery mess.”

Sling TV CEO said the problems were caused by “an unprecedented combination of new customer signups and high levels of viewership,” suggesting Sling’s only failure was being too popular.

Some other big TV events, including the “Game of Thrones” Season 4 premiere, have failed to stream smoothly.

Wired says upgrades are needed to stabilize the streams and lift online TV viewing to the next level.
