WASHINGTON — A woman’s attempt to steal a vehicle Saturday night in Dumfries, Virginia, interrupted a mother changing her baby’s diaper, police said.

Kamyrn Ellyce Simpson, 29, of Woodbridge, was arrested Saturday, Prince William County police said, and she faces multiple charges, including abduction and grand larceny.

Around 7:40 p.m. Saturday in the 3300 block of Dry Powder Circle, the victim, a 38-year-old woman, told police that while she was standing outside of her parked vehicle changing her 3-month-old child’s diaper in the back seat, the unknown suspect got into the driver’s seat of the vehicle.

Police said Simpson then drove the vehicle a short distance with the baby still inside. The victim managed to grab her child from the vehicle and screamed for help. No injuries were reported, police added.

Simpson got out of the vehicle when she was confronted by an intervening citizen, police said. She tried to get into another vehicle in the area before finally running off on foot.

Responding officers were able to identify Simpson after they found her purse in the vehicle. They shortly arrested her.

Simpson is being held without bond.
