WASHINGTON — A man is dead after being shot by officers of the Prince George’s County police Thursday morning.

Police said that the shooting happened in the 4100 block of Byers Street, near Billings Avenue, in the Bradbury Heights area of Capitol Heights, Maryland.

At the scene, Chief Hank Stawinski said a neighbor called asking police to check out a suspicious vehicle.

“When they approached the vehicle, they noted it was occupied by two individuals … as they did so, they noted the individuals inside were asleep,” he said.

When the officers woke the men up, Stawinski said the driver, 19-year-old Terrence Thomas, of Urn Street in Capitol Heights, pointed a gun at the passenger who was trying to flee and at the officer on the passenger’s side of the car.

“The officer on the driver’s side observes the driver with the handgun and fires what we believe to be two shots,” the chief said.

The officer broke the window and pulled Thomas out of the car, where officers performed CPR on Thomas. He later died at the hospital, Stawinski said.

The passenger tried to run away during the shooting, but was caught and is in custody. Police said they found two weapons in the car. No officers were hurt, the police said.

It’s not known yet whether Thomas shot at the officers.
