Police: Off-duty officer shoots suspect during home invasion

WASHINGTON — A man was shot Sunday afternoon while trying to break into the home of an off-duty police officer for the Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission, according to Prince George’s County police.

The man, who was shot in the arm, is expected to be OK.

Police said the incident happened at around 1 p.m. in the 8000 block of Briarcroft Lane in Laurel, Maryland.

Prince George’s County Police Officer Tyler Hunter says his agency will likely release more details Monday. He declined to disclose the races of the suspect or the officer.

According to WSSC, the officer has been with the utility for about a year and had served as a police officer for the University of Maryland, Baltimore for 20 years.

The Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission is a water and wastewater utility serving 1.8 million residents in Prince George’s and Montgomery counties.
