UPPER MARLBORO, Md. — A Prince George County man has been found guilty of ordering his uncle’s murder, from a jail house phone.

Surveillance video and jail house tapes led to guilty verdicts from a jury for Brian Mayhew and the two men who organized and pulled off the murder from the outside, Stanley Winston and Anthony Cannon.

In December 2012, weeks before he was set to testify against his nephew, Nicoh Mayhew was gunned down on the door step of his mother’s home. The uncle was holding his two-year old son when he was shot, the son was hit in the arm but has recovered.

Prosecutors say Brian Mayhew organized the hit to prevent his uncle from taking the stand.

“I need this as a priority,” Brian Mayhew tells one of the men during one phone call from the Prince George’s County Jail.

In a failed attempt to use code words, Mayhew can be heard offering advice for pulling off the crime and tips on how the shooters can find his uncle.

To relay to the jailed Mayhew that the murder had in fact been carried out prosecutors say a caller is heard on one jail house tape saying “Enjoying the beautiful day, a wonderful morning.” Brian Mayhew responded to the caller “You got to put me down man with some motel, man, because I may be coming home man.”

“He ordered the hit of not just any witness, but a witness that was a family member, his uncle,” said prosecutor Christine Murphy.

Surveillance video also captured at the scene show Nicoh Mayhew walking with his son, and the two shooters, one identified as Anthony Cannon following him and running off after the shooting.

This is the second trial in this case, last year the initial trial ended with a hung jury.

State’s Attorney in Prince George’s County Angela Alsobrooks said she’s pleased with the convictions and said intimidating witnesses will not be tolerated In Prince George’s County.

“Not only will we be able to apprehend you, we will seek in every single instance, to prosecute and have removed from our streets for life individuals who kill witnesses,” Alsobrooks said.

There was an extensive security presence during the trial, after Alsobrooks said threats were received.

Cynthia Jenkins Mayhew, the mother of Nicoh Mayhew said justice has been done for her son with the three convictions.

“They know what they did to my son. They just blew my child’s brains out and I had to clean up Nicoh’s brains and I don’t believe any mother or anybody should have to go through that,” Cynthia Jenkins Mayhew said.

All three men face life in prison for the murder. Brian Mayhew faces life in prison without parole.

Brian Mayhew has already been convicted and sentenced to life in prison for the 2011 murders of Anthony McKelvin and Sean Ellis, the two men Mayhew was accused of killing at the time he ordered the hit on his uncle’s death.
