Cause of shaking, massive cracks at Lanham apartments still unknown

WASHINGTON — Officials in Prince George’s County, Maryland are still working to find out what caused massive cracks in two buildings at the Carleton East apartments in Lanham on Saturday night.

Residents of the apartments on Good Luck Road reported rumbling, shaking and the sudden appearance of cracks in walls and ceilings.

Prince George’s County Fire officials ordered the evacuation of 22 units as a precaution. Residents will remain out of the buildings until further notice.

An official with the county’s Department of Permitting, Inspections and Enforcement says engineers will visit the site on Wednesday and take soil samples to try to determine what could have caused the cracking.
