Bringing live, culinary competitions to Washington

WASHINGTON – Ever wonder what it would be like to watch Bryan Voltaggio parachute from an airplane, land in a field and create a culinary masterpiece?

OK, so many “Top Chef” fans already watched this adrenaline- fueled adventure on the hit show’s season premier, but one local company is hoping to bring that experience to hungry Washingtonians, firsthand.

Kulinary Concepts — an Alexandria, Va.-based company that arranges personal food events — goes beyond hosting in-home dinner parties and cooking classes. The company also arranges mini-kitchen wars.

Kulinary Concepts was founded in January 2012 by strategic venture capital specialist Faith Davis, 28, and local chef Nahum Jeannot, 25.

One evening when Jeannot had a foodie friend come to visit, Davis provoked the two friends to prove who was a better cook.

“What ended up happening was a full-blown cooking competition,” says Davis, who lives in Arts District Hyattsville, Md. “I went to the store, made mystery baskets, you know I got all kinds of random ingredients just to see what they could do. I called some friends over and it went down.”

Now, Davis and Jeannot, who currently works for the restaurant at the Goodwin House in Alexandria, Va., are looking to expand their kitchen wars to a much larger event, involving the community and local area restaurants.

“There’s something here and it’s something we can really try to bring to a larger audience,” says Davis, who also hopes to expand the live cooking competitions to other cities throughout the U.S.

One motivation behind the idea is to allow audience members to engage with the community’s chefs and taste their creations.

“We wanted to kind of bring a local element to it
