WASHINGTON – Washington area animal shelters have way too much of a good thing: kittens.
They say spring usually brings an influx of kittens. Staffers even refer to this time of year as kitten season.
But this year, shelters say they’re getting inundated with the little fluff balls.
“We’re overwhelmed,” says Maureen Sosa, executive director of shelter services at the Washington Animal Rescue League. “They’re so sweet and they’re so much fun, but when you can only take care of so many, it’s really hard.”
WARL has been working closely with the Washington Humane Society to rescue and place as many as they can. Until they can find homes, someone has to take care of the little felines. And that can mean constant care for nursing kittens.
To help spread the word about the abundance of kittens, both agencies are holding what they call “kitten showers,” asking for donations of everything from baby bottles to kitten formula to nebulizers for the most vulnerable kittens.
