WASHINGTON — Thanksgiving Day can be one of the busiest days for firefighters — and there were more than 10 fires reported in Montgomery County Thursday.
Montgomery County Fire & Rescue Spokesman Pete Piringer said on Twitter firefighters in the county had responded to about one kitchen fire per hour since 10:30 a.m. Thanksgiving morning, mostly involving stoves and ovens.
Earlier, Piringer provided updates throughout the day about a number of specific cooking fires that had been reported.
At an apartment building in the 11500 block of Amherst Avenue in Silver Spring, firefighters found a burned turkey in a first floor apartment. Firefighters cleared smoke from the residence, and no one was injured.
At another Silver Spring apartment building — in the 700 block of Sligo Avenue — fire crews got a call saying a “turkey is on fire.” When fire crews arrived, they controlled the kitchen fire and said it was caused by a “culinary mistake.” There were no injuries, Piringer tweeted.
In the 143000 block of Astrodome Drive in Layhill, fire crews found a grease fire on a stove. All five people in the house are OK and were not injured, Piringer tweeted.
Also, in an apartment in the 900 block of Clopper Road in Gaithersburg, there was a fire in the oven. Fire crews extinguished the blaze and an EMS team evaluated several occupants who had non-life threatening injuries, Piringer tweeted.
Earlier in the day, Piringer reminded followers to have a plan when in the kitchen to keep yourself and everyone else safe.
