WASHINGTON — Roads have reopened in downtown Silver Spring, Maryland, after a major gas leak caused their closure and an evacuation Monday afternoon.
A backhoe struck a 3/4-inch high-pressure natural gas line near the intersection of Wayne Avenue and Fenton Street in Silver Spring Monday afternoon, according to Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Spokesman Pete Piringer.
The response from a hazardous materials crew closed streets for a few blocks in each direction of Wayne Avenue and Fenton Street. The roads reopened by about 4:10 p.m.
A constriction site near the leak was evacuated.
There were injuries as a result of the leak, Piringer says.
