Police: Passenger charged after grabbing steering wheel, causing crash

WASHINGTON — A Howard County man has been charged with attempted second-degree murder for causing a car crash that injured his mother Friday in Carroll County, Maryland, police said.

At the time of the crash, 51-year-old Susan Harbison of Mount Airy, Maryland, was driving a Honda sedan north on Maryland Route 27 near Braddock Road in Mount Airy, Maryland State police said in a news release. Her 18-year-old son, Devin Harbison, was sitting in the front passenger seat.

Police claimed that Devin Harbison grabbed the steering wheel and pulled it to the right during an argument with his mother, causing the vehicle to go off the road at 11:30 a.m. The car came to a stop in the front yard of a home on the 4300 block of Ridge Road, damaging a tree, basketball hoop and other items in front of the house, police said.

After officers responded to the scene, Susan Harbison was transported to Shock Trauma, and her son was taken to Carroll Hospital Center.

Devin Harbison has been charged with attempted second-degree murder, first- and second-degree assault and reckless endangerment, police said. He was being held Saturday at Carroll County Central Booking.

Police were still investigating the crash Saturday.
