U.Md. police increase security for weekend games and beyond

WASHINGTON — University of Maryland fans will notice a difference in security as the Terps take the hardwood Friday night against Rider Broncs.

University of Maryland Police Chief Dave Mitchell says his department is increasing security for both the Terps basketball game and Saturday’s football game against Indiana University.

“We’re guarding against threats made as a result of what we saw happen in Paris and across the world and what’s going on as we speak but it’s also to guard against fear,” Mitchell says.

Along with K-9s that sniff out improvised explosive device dogs, fans can expect to see more uniformed officers and to go through a security wand scan before they enter the building.

Mitchell says no backpacks will be allowed into either venue. A fan advisory was posted on the university’s site ahead of the games.

“All in all we’ve received a lot of praise for the feeling of safety when our patrons come on to campus and we plan to continue this throughout the indefinite future,” Hooper says.
