WASHINGTON (AP) – A coalition of University of Maryland students has launched a campaign to change the name of the school’s football stadium, citing racist beliefs of the man it’s named after.
The students tell The Washington Post (http://wapo.st/1y8Ayg3 ) that Byrd Stadium’s namesake, former university president H.C. “Curley” Byrd, was a racist and a segregationist whose beliefs go against Maryland’s flagship school’s mission and principles.
On Wednesday night, the school’s student government agreed to a resolution in support of a name change.
A school spokesman says existing names on all campus buildings represent the university’s long history and culture. But he says the matter has been sent to the university’s facilities naming committee for further review.
Ultimate authority to rename school buildings rests with the University System of Maryland Board of Regents.
