Driver commutes backward, reversing down busy Canal Road (Video)

Dashcam footage appears to show a person driving backward down Canal Road in Washington, D.C. during morning rush hour on Friday, Jan. 26, 2018. “Everybody going around him was just in disbelief,” says Kaab Salama, who shared the footage with WTOP. WASHINGTON — A commuter recorded someone reversing down Canal Road in the direction of traffic during the morning rush hour Friday.

The camera on Kaab Salama’s dashcam captures another driver navigating in the left of two closed lanes. He came upon the wrong-direction driver as Salama was traveling down the Clara Barton Parkway, after it becomes Canal Road just past Arizona Avenue, at 8:30 a.m. during his commute into D.C. from Vienna, Virginia.

“Everybody going around him was just in disbelief,” Salama said. “I’ve never seen anything like it. As I went past him, he just looked over and smiled. It’s not like he had his head over his shoulder either. Maybe he was using a rear-view camera.”

No one called to report the driver, said U.S. Park Police Sgt. James Dingeldein. It is difficult to see the license plate of the car, as sunlight obscures it as the driver recording the incident passes it by; however, Dingeldein said there is no question it is a safety hazard.

“You cannot back up, as it presents a safety hazard to other motorists during the rush hour,” he told WTOP.
