WASHINGTON — When it comes to Halloween candy in the D.C. area, many shoppers are reaching for the chocolate to distribute to trick-or-treaters.
Grocery-delivery service Peapod examined its Halloween candy sales so far through October and found that Hershey’s Kit Kat bars ranked No. 1 among its users — and nine out of the top 10 are chocolate.
Coming in at No. 2 in the D.C. area is candy corn — a seasonal favorite that sees a huge uptick in October in all cities Peapod studied, said Peapod spokeswoman Peg Merzbacher.
“It’s very popular. It’s got the No. 2 ranking in Washington, and that’s similar to New York. It’s a little lower in New England and Pennsylvania at 3 and it comes in at 5 in Chicago,” Merzbacher said. “I guess Halloween isn’t Halloween without candy corn.”
While candy corn has its place as a Halloween staple, chocolate has been a beloved snack for trick-or-treaters since Peapod began evaluating its D.C.-area data in 2001.
“Chocolate is among the most popular thing for most trick-or-treater and I don’t think most of the people buying the candy this year want to disappoint them,” Merzbacher said.
Peapod declined to give WTOP details about quantities sold for each candy or how many purchases were included in the data.
Below is Peapod’s ranking of the top 10 most popular candies:
