Human skeletal remains found in Fairfax Co.

WASHINGTON — Fairfax County police are investigating human skeletal remains found near a homeless camp Thursday morning.

The remains were found near the camp located in the 2900 block of East Lee Avenue in the Alexandria area of Fairfax County around 10 a.m. A  construction crew discovered the remains while cleaning up a wooded area next to a business under construction, police said.

After police verified that the remains were human, investigators responded to the scene around 1 p.m.

Before finding the remains, crew members found a wallet, with an identification listing the address of a shelter. The identity of the person and the cause of death are still under investigation, police said.

Detectives are in the early stages of the investigation, and will work with the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner on the case.
