Man dies after crashing into a tree on GW Parkway

WASHINGTON — A man died after crashing into a tree on northbound George Washington Parkway early Monday morning, causing the road to close for about three hours.

Police said they believe the man was speeding when he hit a tree in between the CIA exit and the Interstate 495 exit.

U.S. Park Police were called to the scene around 6:15 a.m. and were assisted by Fairfax County police.

The man was extricated from his vehicle and taken to the hospital around 6:55 a.m. Police said he died on the way to surgery.

Authorities did not release a name or age, but said the man’s family has been notified.

The parkway was reopened around 9:50 a.m.
