FAIRFAX, Va. — “I’m very happy,” said Malenda Barzilai. “It’s a sign that spring is here.”

She was among many who turned out, under cloudy skies and in a slight drizzle, to welcome back the Community Farmer’s Market in Fairfax. Jack Salberg of Nashville, saw similarity in the market here to the one in his hometown.

“They’re about the same,” Salberg said, while smiling. “There’s food and it’s fresh.”

Meanwhile, Sara Lissabet clutched a fat bunch of large asparagus and said she also bought a batch of fresh, locally produced, humanely raised pork.

“That’s important to me,” Lissabet said. “I’m very glad it’s back.” I don’t get a chance to come very often.”

Kasey Cox made a beeline through the rain for a display of fresh herbs. She said she always gets recipes from vendors at the market in order to try something new. The Missouri transplant said visiting the market is like having her own garden right in the middle of the city.

“I feel like I’m home getting farm fresh stuff,” Cox said. “I absolutely love it. They have things you cant get at grocery stores.”
