WASHINGTON — If you swing by a comic book shop Saturday then chances are a free comic book will be up for grabs.

It’s all part of Free Comic Book Day, held the first Saturday in May, at select locations in the U.S. and worldwide. Comic book fans old and new are encouraged to go along to their local comic store.

Billy Tucci, a writer and illustrator for DC Comics, said it’s about stores inviting families to meet comic creators and hand out free books.

The event has been around since 2002.

If you are unsure where your local store is, then you can find out on the Free Comic Book Day website.

Stores usually allow customers to choose from a few titles from the free comics table.

Preview comics are also on show at some stores.
