Police arrest teenager in killing of another teen in Southeast

WASHINGTON — A teenager has been arrested in the fatal shooting of another teenager in Southeast D.C.

D.C. police Friday arrested a 16-year-old and charged him for the killing of 17-year-old James Anthony Smith.

The shooting happened on the 1900 block of Frederick Douglass Court on Dec. 18, 2017. Police arrived shortly before 6 p.m. and found Smith unconscious and unresponsive. He was shot multiple times. First responders took him to a hospital, but he died after lifesaving efforts.

The Washington Post reported that Smith was found without shoes near the basketball court. Smith’s mother, Benita, told NBC Washington that someone tried to steal her son’s shoes, which were an early Christmas present from her, and gunfire erupted after an argument.
